I do think if we are going to start talking about catastrophic future burdens, we should start with the damage that will be done by broadcasting to the world the UK is willing to change rules for legal migrants whenever the government feels like it

The problem is we are just subsidising demand for *checks notes* basic food products

Freedom of movement isn't a nice to have, it's pretty essential to how the economy across the bloc works, you wouldn't get agreement on allowing certain nations to turn it off whenever it was politically or economically advantageous

Do feel that one of the biggest challenges the remain/rejoin camp has always faced is that its political advocates fundamentally disagree with a core pillar of the EU

Government will take heart from revised projections and better comparative performance, but growth still below the rates at the height of the austerity years and another round of inflation above 4% when livings costs are already too much for many is pretty miserable www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

UK growth forecast upgraded but energy prices and rates to hit in 2027
The prediction from the IMF comes as final preparations are being made to the first Budget under Prime Minister Andy Burham.

Just turned on the TV and This Morning is on and they're talking about the importance of sewing and not being so wasteful with ripped clothes

There is no joined up strategy on energy, which is why we lurch into crisis, try and remedy it with subsidies and tax cuts which stimulate demand, and then get a bit of respite in the warmer months before doing the whole thing again in the winter

Asides from the fact that I think it's good that even people on high incomes should benefit from state support, they also have a higher propensity to consume fuel, and this reduces the need for consumption which is something we should be striving for in a supply crisis to effectively lower costs

If we do re-join the EU at any point, we can get our own Goodbye Lenin where a guy has to convince his grandparents we are still out by moaning about airport queues and the price of cheese

Shouldn't be understated how damaging it is to signal and encourage certain sectors and industries to develop, only to pull away support at the moment activity begins to really get going, any supposed savings are eclipsed by the sunk costs of investing in skills and capital no longer needed

Would love to know how many hours on aggregate get wasted each year trying to get a refund you are entitled to or re-negotiating the final deal for something like your internet package

When we talk about small changes to help people, this is the sort of stuff that is meaningful, not to be dramatic, but the constant battle with companies not to get ripped off is just a bit demoralising

Put it off but watching (and enjoying) Andor and the portrayal of every day life for imperial figures really raises questions about what Darth Vader was doing whenever he had to go back to the capital, did he attend fancy dinners or participate on think tank panels, this is the stuff I want to see

Although they certainly should not have committed to a spending target while ruling out tax rises

Dean Hochlaf @dhochlaf.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Streeting looking a bit evasive on the 3% defence spending target I think demonstrates why it is an issue, imo would have been better to set out what the gov wanted to achieve for defence capabilities and set out how to get there

Saw a guy on linkedin suggest the government didn't understand market dynamics because instant access to price signals would be bad because it would lead to tacit collusion and I guess you just have to put your head in your hands

Dean Hochlaf @dhochlaf.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Normally hate using phrases like "basic economics" because in reality simple models fail to capture the complex dynamics which influence our economy and can lead to excessively simple arguments, but then I see people continue to suggest cutting VAT on fuel during a supply crisis and I re-consider

Horrid rhetoric but it comes from a place of desperation not strength They're squeezed to their right, failed to supplant the tories, and progressives rally around opponents All he has is drifting further for attention, with no thought to those who suffer when this nonsense becomes normalised

Not the main thing, but it does seem wild to me and an indictment on our political environment that we have gone from a Tory led government passing the social value act to embed social and environmental considerations into procurement to this sort of stuff in about 14 years

Think a lot of the glowing reviews from right wing journalists come from a place of wanting to help, but that general lack of scrutiny has led to mistakes like this becoming common and that has fed into their policies

Looks like a by-election where everyone can claim a win Labour hold on comfortably, Greens significantly increase their vote share, and the Tories keep their deposit which is basically a win under their new assessment framework

It's why I've found the main parties going along with suggestions we had an open border policy or we lost control so frustrating, because it wasn't true, the UK made conscious decisions which led to immigration being slightly higher for a few years, and those decisions should have been defended

Find the accusation the government "smuggled" in Afghans so nauseating, there were very pressing moral and diplomatic reasons why the UK had to act, and omitting that context for cheap political points is gross

The Tories in England long imagined that they were enthusiastic about monarchy, the church, and the beauties of the old English Constitution, until the day of danger wrung from them the confession that they are enthusiastic only about pensioner property values

Would be good if there were closer markets we could sell to where the UK enjoys a competitive advantage producing lamb
010
Dean Hochlaf @dhochlaf.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This reminded me of the time Boris Johnson questioned why we were not selling more lamb to China than New Zealand when Wales is geographically closer to Beijing, seemingly unaware that sea freights from the UK are not able to travel in a straight line

Another event beyond our control requiring a scrambled response because we have eroded the tax base and weakened state capacity Multiple opportunities to at least partially fix this have been missed in the last couple of years and I hope that changes with this budget

Anyways, am glad Badenoch has rejected and challenged those who are trying to narrow the definition of who is English, not least because my son has only one grandparent born on these Isles and they are Scottish, and after the loss to Slovenia I just don't want him to suffer like me

For all the talk of adapting to change, the tories seem to deeply resent the path Boris Johnson put them on with its greater focus on a proactive state to support specific industries and regions and have reverted to pretty crude Thatcher era rhetoric with pretty bland policy ideas

Sure the inheritance tax cut might only help a small minority of the wealthiest people, but look at the proposal to cut interest rates on student loans that will only help a small minority of those on the highest incomes

Also there are still plenty of people aged above 24 who work in jobs that might now go to younger workers if there was a substantial cost incentive for businesses to shift, which would further reduce the imaginary savings from the welfare budget the opposition thinks will be paying for everything

Dean Hochlaf @dhochlaf.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Youth unemployment might have risen a bit, but it's not exclusively down to NICs and rates for this group are always a bit higher than the national average, so that is a lot of people who will see their incomes cut by these proposals and that will mean poverty or family spreading incomes more thinly
