The main character in My Yiddish Vacation is a 7-year-old girl, and her favorite song is “Mack the Knife.”
"Frankie thinks he's a real macher dressed in those clothes," Grandpa whispers to me. A macher is a "big shot."

I'm excited when my favorite song comes on-
"Mack the Knife." It's such a great song that even Sammy can't help himself. He grabs Grandma's hand and we all dance together.

Today’s cursed item at the thrift
A promotional poster, framed, for CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. It has his face and his white hair and beard and his glasses and his black suit, white shirt and bright blue tie. (Blitzer dresses fine I think. Boring but classic quality look. I could be wrong I haven’t seen him in a while.)

Anyway it’s like a 24x36 poster, framed, on a shelf at the Salvation Army thrift. I didn’t get close enough to see the price.

It’s so impressive teenagers from two states organized 30 teens for an egging in 1993. AOL didn’t even have buddy lists yet. Did they meet on rec.sport.baseball.phillies? #phillies on EFNet? A gopher server?
Two teens arrested for egging house of Mitch Williams
Associated Press
MOORESTOWN - Two teenagers were charged with pelting the home of Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Mitch Williams with eggs to show their displeasure with his performance in the World Series.
Hours after Williams gave up the series-winning home run against Toronto on Saturday, police said about 30 youngsters armed with cartons of eggs arrived at Williams' house.
Williams was not at the house - after leaving Toronto, he flew to his home in Arlington, Texas, where he lives during much of the offseason.
When police arrived, most of the youths fled, but two were taken into custody — a 17-year-old from Gwynedd, Pa. and a
16-year-old from Moorestown. Both were released to their parents and could face harassment charges, police said.
Police had been patrolling the area since Oct. 20 after at least two death threats against Williams. The threats began after Williams blew a five-run lead and the Phillies lost Game 4 of the World Series.
Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk downplayed reports that Williams was upset by the incident.
"The issue is over. It's being blown out of proportion," Shenk said Tuesday. "He's out hunting in Texas with his brother."
Williams has lived in Moorestown since February and had enjoyed a celebrity status. Well-wishers put up signs on his lawn and house saying "Good Luck Mitch" and motorists honked their horns as they drove past.

When the PA Lottery brought back Gus the Groundhog as a CGI creation instead of a puppet a decade ago, one of Gus’s puppet creators told The Patriot-News that “nobody likes CGI characters, unless they are monsters or robots.” www.pennlive.com/politics/201...
Rick Lazzarini, who had a hand in Gus' creation, is among those who are voicing opposition to the switch to a computer-generated character.

"Unfortunately, the PA Lottery and Ad Agency MARC USA are sullying that institution by bringing back a soulless, computer-generated imitation of Gus. What the people of Pennsylvania missed was the endearing puppet that took a team of talented puppeteers to bring to life, interacting with the humans in the ads," Lazzarini said.

"Nobody likes CGI characters, unless they are monsters or robots. Did anyone like it when they switched Yoda from a beautifully crafted and performed puppet to a pale CGI version? Nope."

Found a really good correction in the August 27, 1994 Philadelphia Daily News
CORRECTION

Funds to improve the Italian Market totaled $700,000 in Marrie Wilson's letter to the editor Thursday, not $700 million.

Link to corrections page in Daily News on newspapers.com: https://www.newspapers.com/article/philadelphia-daily-news/185913155/

Here's a link to Marrie Wilson's original letter, which compared Joe Vignola to Judas and said he sold out for his own 30 pieces of silver, $700,000 (or, in her letter as originally printed, $700 million): https://www.newspapers.com/article/philadelphia-daily-news/185913595/

She was upset Vignola, then a Philadelphia City Councilman, voted for the $700,000 grant from the city for sidewalk, awning and other upgrades to the Italian Market: https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-philadelphia-inquirer/185913717/

Here's another story on the renovations planned: https://www.newspapers.com/article/philadelphia-daily-news/185913822/

I do not know if the councilman originally said he'd vote no.

Today’s 12 points were the fourth-most the Eagles have scored in a second half this season
Two PSX (aka Playstation, aka PS1) compact discs. Both are for the video game Xenogears. It is the same Disc, disc 2. It is an image on the disc of Weltall, the gear the main character Fei uses in the game (it's a thing you use in the game in certain battles against bigger monsters or others gears). It's made by Squaresoft. The game is rated T, for teen. Above the first disc it says "EAGLES FIRST HALF OFFENSE." Above the second disc it says "EAGLES SECOND HALF OFFENSE."

This is originally a meme I made in the 2022 season… when they went to, and lost, the Super Bowl. The joke is that Xenogears disc 1 is a well-developed game with an intriguing-if-convoluted story, while disc 2 was rushed and it's just… the characters telling stories in rocking chairs? I dunno. It's awful. They need to remake it. Anyway this is what the Eagles offense is like. Nick Sirianni in a rocking chair. But now it’s both halves of offenses are Disc 2.

In 1985 the Eagles led the Vikings 23-0 in the fourth and lost 28-23. Wade Wilson got benched at half, but came back in after rookie QB Steve Bono went 1-for-10 for 5 yards. The message in the Vikings’ huddle: Let’s at least try to score. Pep talks are overrated. defector.com/the-eagles-s...
Newspaper clipping from 2 December 1985 Minneapolis Star and Tribune. Excerpt from game story on Vikings 28-23 win:

There was 11:43 left when Wade Wilson trotted to the huddle to replace Bono, who had completed one of 10 passes for 5 yards. Wilson looked around at his teammates. No need to look at the scoreboard. They knew the count.

“I go into the huddle and they say, ‘Hey, we're out of the ball game.
Let’s just go down, get a touchdown and say we were able to score,’” Wilson said. “Our defense got some things going. Before we knew it, we had a shot to win.”

In 1955 Walt Disney visited Levittown and someone brought a sign that read “Lady loves the Tramp” archive.org/details/walt...
Excerpt from small booklet (linked in tweet) about The Day Walt Disney Came To Levittown. There's a photo of the crowd greeting Walt at the train station of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The caption reads: ”AT THE LEVITTOWN STATION of the P.R.R. seven thousand children accompanied by their parents await Walt Disney’s arrival.” Signs in the crowd read "Welcome Mr. Disney”, Levittown Says Hello and “Lady loves the Tramp.” There's another photo of Disney and a young boy waving from a train car.

PEERING from the cab of the locomotive that he had piloted from New York, Walt Disney smiles at the thousands of youngsters that turned out to welcome him. Colin Cho, the School's official greeter waves excitedly to friends.”

There are drawings of Mickey, Donald and one of the Seven Dwarves below the Disney photo. The photos are courtesy Dominic Sagolla. There is the start of a story on the first page. It reads:

t was a great day! A beautiful Saturday afternoon in September! Poking his coonskin-head capped head from the cab of the engine of a nine-car train which he himself piloted from New York’s Pennsylvania station, was America’s beloved Walt Disney, tugging on the whistle to salute some 7,000 greeters at the Levittown-Tullytown PRR station.

Mr. Disneyland himself! Proud to no end that in America’s newest and fastest growing city, some 300 schoolchildren had persuaded their school board to name the new Tullytown School for him and patterned the layout of the school after his many Disneyland characters.

I was wondering if the Lambeau Leap were ever against the rules and I found this delightful description of it from 1995. www.newspapers.com/article/the-...
The NFL, usually quick to crack down on anybody having too much fun, has issued no directives to cease the revelry. In light of a snowball barrage last Saturday at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, players bonding with the community is actually good public relations for the league. Here's how it works: After a big play, the hero gets a running start like a high jumper.

He has to be careful to avoid the ice near the base of the wall lest he slip and look foolish, Brooks said. Then he flings himself upward into the outstretched arms of spectators while viewers elsewhere in the stadium yell even louder.

The Sixers mascots are weird next to each other because Franklin has a big mascot head and Hip Hop has a human-sized head with rabbit ears
Hip Hop and Franklin next to each other with a plant in a Raptors jersey for a skit. The dog, Franklin, has a giant mascot head. Hip Hop’s head is more human-sized and just has big rabbit ears.

Also it’s a photo of the scoreboard and the scoreboard is broken. It looks like the left side has some sort of survey software on it.

I had to be here for the return of Hip Hop
A cardboard cutout of Hip Hop, aka Rabbit Iverson and the Basketball Rabbit, in a blue Sixers jersey from the late 90s/early 00s with the swoosh logo. Next to it is me! I’m in the No Photos / Not For Resale Jordan 1s, Levis 501 ‘93 blue jeans (selvedge of course!) and a white t-shirt with the May 2001 Daily News cover that photoshops the Sixers’ Iverson, McKie and Snow onto an old revolutionary war drawing where everyone’s hurt. It says Spirit of 76ers. The callout headline up top, to show how long ago it was, is “When a vegetarian comes to dinner.”

I have shoulder length (almost) hair and am looking pretty good, all things considered!

If you’re wearing this jersey to the Sixers game tonight they should let you in for free
Sixers Majestic NBA jersey from 2001. It’s white with the Sixers swoosh logo in the middle and a 2001 NBA Finals logo on the left breast. The shoulders are this gold color. The back of the same jersey. It’s this gold satin-y looking color. In black it has Iverson’s name and his number 3.
