I love your OW and Wild Hunt series. I'm looking forward to reading this one as well. Loved seeing you on Lunch w/ Mal. I haven't been able to jump on live because of ye olde day job.

I turn 60 later this year. And I’m still trying to figure things out. Particularly how to build a following of readers who enjoy my urban fantasy and thrillers. As part of my morning meditation, I open myself up to an abundance of creativity, ideas, love, gratitude, and joy. Success will follow.

As a trans lesbian, I don’t have a problem with anyone writing trans main characters. But I strongly encourage cis authors to hire a sensitivity reader to make them aware of any problematic issues in the manuscript. This avoids causing harm to both trans people and the author’s reputation.

When #generativeAI came along, I was wowed like a lot of people. I played around with it a lot. Text generation, image generation, and even voice generation. I wasn't interested in using it as a replacement for my creativity, but as one of many tools to express and enhance my creativity.

I've always been an early adopter of tech. I wrote my first stories longhand, then on a manual typewriter. I've evolved to using WordPerfect, then MS Words, and now Scrivener.

Inspired by NPR’s Tiny Desk shelves. This is one of my bookshelves. Zoom in to see all the interesting things on my shelf. Books by me and others, faeries, goddesses, Buddhas, candles, tarot decks, a motorcycle license plate, and--hey, is that a real painted skull? Maybe.

Do you cringe when you start editing your rough drafts? No need to feel ashamed. Your rough drafts aren't shitty. They're just rough. You had to write the shitty words in order to write the better words. So stop shitting on your rough drafts. #authorsky #booksky #amwriting #writinglife

I was only a toddler when the Woodstock Musical Festival occurred. But as a teen, I had the 3-disc album. Loved it.

Any idea when you’ll open again? How supportive are the Big 5 of queer urban fantasy? My first 2 crime thrillers were trad pubbed but I was disappointed in lack of support. Had a lot of success as an indie. Now I’m shifting to urban fantasy and considering trad pub again.

It sucks. We didn’t have social media when I transitioned back in the Stone Age. On the plus side, social media helps us connect with each other. But the downside is the pile ons. Stay strong. 💜

I started writing because I was sick of how trans characters were portrayed in crime fiction. I wanted badass trans characters who pushed back against the bigoted stereotypes. So I started writing them. And readers, both trans and cis, loved them. dharmakelleher.com #queermysteries

KDP has no say in the matter unless your ebook is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. Only KU requires exclusivity, and then only for ebooks, not print.

Getting feedback is important. FYI, I do sensitivity reads and charge a reasonable fee. If you’re interested, send an email to dharma@dharmakelleher.com. My goal is to make you aware of any potential issues if any and give suggestions how to fix them while remaining true to your story.

I have a lot of friends who prefer being traditionally published. Others, like me, prefer being indie. And some have some books indie and other books trad pubbed.

Not a lot. Generally, a reader puts in an order request at their bookstore. So you probably won’t find my books already on the shelves. Being an author is a lot like being trans. Everyone has their own path. We all have to find the right one for us.

Dharma Kelleher 📚🏳️‍⚧️ @dharmakelleher.bsky.social · 03/05/2025

I publish everywhere (Amazon, Apple, Kobo, etc.) and on my own website. My print books are also available wholesale to bookstores. Some authors are exclusive to Amazon if their ebooks are in Kindle Unlimited.

I was one of the first trans authors in crime fiction. Alibi, a Penguin Random House imprint, published my first 2 thrillers. But the covers were bad and they didn’t do much to promote them. After that, I decided to publish my own books. More work, more control, and more reward.

If you’re looking to go the traditional publishing route, I’d recommend getting an agent first. Most major publishers require it, though some small presses don’t. I used querytracker.net to find mine.

Bookfunnel doesn’t have anything to do with Amazon. If you use BF for direct sales fulfillment, sending newsletter reader magnets, or ARC copies, you upload the EPUB files directly to BF.

As with everything in this biz, be wary of scammers (which you are, so kudos). And also know that what works for one person's business model may not work with yours. Trust your gut.
