It's been a long, cold winter. At least by recent standards. Nice to see the river starting to open up today.

Peringuey's adder, Swakopmund, Namibia. Venomous but too tiny to be much danger to humans.

Just a bit of snow here. Reminds me of the storms we got when I first moved to Vermont 15 years ago. But those started in October and we didn't get much melting from December through March.

Living desert tour in swakopmund today. The students got to learn about the small creatures rarely seen and the geology of the dunes that are so prominent.

More from the Pantanal. The adult purple gallinule tried to stay out of sight in the tall grass, but the juveniles showed off their balancing act higher up.

Peccaries in the Pantanal, Brazil. They travel in groups, which is always challenging for a photographer.

My best jaguar photos from the Pantanal in Brazil. They came out OK w/ some editing in spite of a super low-light setting. You have to take your big cats where you can find them.

Hyacinth macaws in the Pantanal. Not many in the world, but conservation programs were working well in the area I visited.

I'm slowly getting through photos from my last trip to Brazil. Here are a few good ones from Big Day Birding in the Atlantic rainforest south of Sao Paulo. Overcast skies made photography challenging.

Another video from our plastic safari yesterday. This one is for the birds. Bright guara birds, or scarlet ibis, to be exact. Their numbers have dwindled due to coastal development, but there are still many to see in the mangroves around the channel.

Last time I was in Brazil was around Christmas, and i noticed how much people here like panettone cakes. Now it's Easter, and "colomba" cakes are everywhere. They are basically the same as panettone. Can't blame the Brasileiras, though. These cakes taste good!

I've always had bad luck with burrowing owls. Go to a place where they're supposed to be, and... nope... no owls. So when my host in Guarau said he could take me to see some, I was not hopeful... AND I didn't think we'd be going to the beach, either... but glad I was wrong on both counts!
