Sounds really rough to have to actually run for office politicalwire.com/2026/10/14/k...
Said Paxton: “Those are my two disadvantages. One was — three, actually: not having time to raise more money, having the negative ads, and my opponent is well-funded and well-known.”

Well, look, you know, this isn't like I'm building a building, which I can do out of my back pocket. It's easier to do that for me, and it's what I've been doing. This is a whole new world, probably mostly good, but some bad too. And it's a very powerful world. It's a very—potentially really could be good for medical. I mean, some of the things they're coming up with now that they never even thought about. But with good comes bad, and we want them, we want all of them to behave for themselves. We're selling millions of barrels of oil—that's ours—and it's been amazing. But we fought that war, it was less than one day. It was over. We're doing very well in Iran too. But it's a much bigger area, much bigger country, much further away. And—but the result is going to be the same. They want to make a deal. As soon as I make a deal, oil prices will drop to what they were. You know, when I was—you've heard me say this—When I was part of the going in, I was in Iowa, helping them campaign a little bit for the thing that we have coming up. And in Iowa, I mean, it was—oil was $1.90. I mean, it was like almost nothing. We broke the $2 barriers. One station was $1.85. One was $1.95. One was $1.99, and it was coming down all over the country. Now California is a little bit fictitious because in California they judge every time you lower the oil, they judge that. But I had no other way down there. And then I said to my people, including him, I said, "I hate to do this, you guys, but we have to take the nuclear weapon away from you."

These are, uh, not mutually exclusive www.vanityfair.com/story/jd-van...
Ever since, Vance has been pilloried as a cynical political opportunist. “I don’t think JD Vance believes in anything,” says Stuart Stevens, who ran Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. “I think he would be a Trotskyite if that would advance him.” But what does Vance’s mentor Chua think of his 180-degree transformation? “I have a very different view of JD,” she says. “I do not think he changed at all. I think he’s exactly the same guy.”

UNC's Athletics is launching a line of liquors (!?!?!) and the @newsobserver.com story has this incredible diss: www.newsobserver.com/news/local/e...
Ernest Hemingway famously said he drinks to make other people more interesting. UNC’s football program doesn’t seem to need help in that department. UNC is coming off a hard-fought win during the season opener against Texas Christian University in Dublin, Ireland. But that victory has not solved the program’s problems. In the wake of general manager Michael Lombardi’s high-profile resignation and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick’s extended medical leave, the school continues to investigate misconduct in the football program, The News & Observer previously reported. According to unverified media reports, investigators are asking questions about several eyebrow-raising topics, like the provision of illicit substances to a player, as well as possible inappropriate relationships between players and staff.

Once upon a time, I thought that the growth in legal sports gambling might be stymied by inevitable revelations of rigging. Those revelations have come, in sufficient volume to strongly suggest that the practice is extensive. (When you realize how inept the known participants had to be to get caught, you have to believe that many more competent cheaters are escaping notice.) I should have known better, I suppose, than to think that would affect anything. It is the American way: if you know the horse races are fixed, you hope to get in on the inside info.

Something that jumps out at me in the Natalie Harp reporting is the extent to which many Trump aides see themselves as In On The Joke and unnerved by Harp because she seems to be totally earnest www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/u... www.cnn.com/2026/08/18/p...
Even in this West Wing, in which loyalty to the president seems to know no bounds, Ms. Harp’s displays of devotion have unnerved some of her colleagues. As long as Ms. Harp is around, he enjoys an unvetted flow of information, some of it poisonous and counterproductive, at least as far as a number of his other advisers are concerned. It was October 2023, and Donald Trump was due at a New York City courthouse to fight his latest set of legal troubles. But as the motorcade idled outside his Trump Tower residence, staffers confronted a more immediate problem: There wasn’t room for Harp, the hyper-loyal aide whose devotion to Trump had quickly entrenched her within his orbit.

A screaming match in the lobby ensued, with Harp insisting that Trump had personally asked her to attend the court appearance, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Denied a seat but determined not to be left behind, Harp jumped into an SUV trunk, according to the two sources and confirmed by a photo obtained by CNN. The ubiquity sometimes ruffles feathers within the White House, especially for some Trump advisers who at times have wanted to meet privately with the president — only to find Harp sitting in on the meeting as well, one of the sources familiar with the dynamic told CNN. The 35-year-old is also territorial about Trump and has told others that she only reports to him, irritating other staffers who work within the White House’s chain of command, another source said.

The Panthers just announced a $500M upgrade to Bank of America Stadium that for all intents and purposes appears designed to make the stadium look more like an airport. This fits with the overall vibe of Charlotte - you're killing time at a Panera Bread until you can take off for somewhere better.

@jonlemire.bsky.social on the Reflecting Pool and Trump's larger predicament: www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
Even some of his closest allies, two of them told me, privately rolled their eyes at the president’s obsession and scoffed at his refusal to admit a mistake. One Republican lawmaker, speaking to me on the condition of anonymity to avoid Trump’s wrath, deemed it “the dumbest controversy of his term” but added, with a rueful chuckle, that “it’s better than talking about how badly everything else is going.”

Yes well, Kush Desai would say that, wouldn't he www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/u...
The billionaire financier Howard Kessler, a leukemia survivor who is friendly with Mr. Trump and has urged support for cannabis as a pain treatment, was also involved in the push to delay the hemp limits. His allies worked with the White House on the language sent to Congress, according to two people familiar with the situation who requested anonymity to describe private conversations.

Kush Desai, a White House spokesman, suggested in a statement that Mr. Worley and the influence campaign had nothing to do with Mr. Trump’s stance. The White House’s support for hemp is in “the best interest of the American people” and is intended to help veterans and patients, he said.

A deadline that could have determined Sen. Mitch McConnell’s future in the Senate has come and gone as the timeline for the Kentucky Republican’s return remains in the air.

Speculation swirled over Aug. 3 and its ramifications for McConnell’s winnowing tenure in the Senate, given that he’s been absent from the public eye since early June and is slated to retire at the end of this year.

Armchair election quarterbacks suggested that Monday was the day for Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, to have called a special election to replace McConnell.
