The Lake Constance data were published at: fred.igb-berlin.de Search for: fred.igb-berlin.de/search/index... FRED (Freshwater Research and Environmental Database) is @igb-berlin.de Berlin's open data repository for long-term freshwater research data on lakes, rivers and wetlands.
Presentation slide titled "How to publish data sets?"

Text: "Gaedke, U. (revised), Scientific Data (L. Constance 1979–1998). 10 data packages: https://fred.igb-berlin.de/data/package/1064 to .... 1073. → Documentation Gaedke@uni-potsdam.de"

Three blue ellipses highlight features of the data set:

1) "Ca. weekly sampling for ≤ 20 years (1979–1998)"
2) "Physical & chemical data; ALL plankton groups via microscope, biomass, production; same time & location"
3) "→ extensive contextual information"

Top right: a food-web diagram of Lake Constance. Circles sized by biomass represent Fish, Carnivorous Crustaceans, Herbivorous Crustaceans, Rotifers, Ciliates, , Phytoplankton, Bacteriaand a dashed Detritus cloud. Arrows of varying thickness show carbon flows between them, labelled with numeric rates.

Enthusiastic ovations for the plenary of Ursula Gaedke at #DGL2026 on: "Lessons from the past for the future: 40 years of synthesizing data from Lake Constance and other lakes". Her conclusions: Try to get the full picture, #ciliates remain mysterious – and publish your data. #Limnology
Ursula Gaedke standing at a lectern with a laptop in a lecture hall, presenting in front of two projection screens showing the same slide.

Beside her is a roll-up banner with a mossy waterfall photo and the DGL (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Limnologie) logo. The slide reads "Some personal take-home messages":

• Powerful graphical and computational tools for large data sets available, but what do they really tell/hide?

• Bias – variance trade-off: very focused hypotheses testing vs. fuzzy fishing in data sets – miss the unexpected?

• Unexpected, inexplicable results annoying, stressful but potential for new discoveries – slow science

• Data sharing, asking others, cooperations, and interdisciplinary work demands effort but may be really rewarding

• Promoting diversity remains a challenge

A blue oval at the bottom quotes Lama Shenpen Hookam, PhD Oxford, buddhist teacher: "the longing to know is paramount, thinking to know is deadly"

Plenary talk of Gabriel Singer (University of Innsbruck) at #DGL2026 about "Catalyzing engaged river science at large scales". By example of the undammed Greek/Albanian Vjosa, he demonstrates how geological diversity and dispersal processes promote high beta-biodiversity.
