“I know it's far slower to do it that way, but if I want people to be able to look at the code I've written and use it as an example, I want it to be, you know, everything's there for a reason. I can explain it all.”

“How do we get to the point where I can say the business analyst, Margaret in accounting, Tony in sales, Jana in marketing, why can't they deploy 10 times a day?”

How does Gas City, a popular open source framework for building your own software factory, manage its own development? In the latest episode of the Agents and Engineers podcast, we’ll talk with one of the maintainers of Gas City on how she, and the project, approach agentic development.

“Knowing how to code like software developers, you know, basic refactoring, documenting, and testing, right? If a data scientist knows how to do that, then the chance of them taking their work. into a mode where that you can have high leverage becomes really high.”

“If you're not throwing a bunch of things away every week and starting over or adding new stuff or simplifying ever like every week, then you're probably not iterating fast enough”

“The job of software engineering is going to become much, much, much more interesting. You're basically going to be left with the interesting problem, the hard stuff, the stuff that requires taste.”

“A premise we had like, I don't know, 15 years ago, we're like, oh yeah, data science is going to be like this amazing thing that's like going to deliver all this business value. I don't think we have really delivered. I think for a large part we've failed, right?”

“We're going to have humans in the loop, and humans are going to need to read code and sign off on it before shipping it. And readability will still matter, and Python remains the hands-on winner for that.”

“For anyone listening, I would just say, you know, hold on to that as much as you can, ‘cause you still need to understand stuff…I think that's the last bastion of what we can do as humans.”

"'The agent can do encryption for me.' I assure you the agent cannot. These agents models are terrible at cryptography."

“The new programming language is English. The new runtime is the agent runtime. The new software is skills.”

“We've seen through history again and again and again, the more we automate, the more critical human judgment becomes.”

“And so I'm almost never looking directly at the code, but I am thinking actively about the problem, and I'm asking the agents to demonstrate to me that my concerns are met.”

“The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed.” - William Gibson If you’re on the socials or maybe anxiously updating codex to see if GPT 5.6 is now available, you probably don’t see how any engineers could not be using agents to help them build software.

Stop copy-pasting .gitignore files. gig generates them from GitHub's templates in one command: gig go,nextjs, terraform Single binary, works offline, installs via Homebrew. github.com/dgerlanc/gig
Logo for gig, a .gitignore generator CLI tool. Dark navy background with "gig" in large white text preceded by a blue terminal chevron prompt. A red strikethrough line crosses the word, visually suggesting ignoring or excluding files. Below reads ".GITIGNORE GENERATOR" in smaller spaced capitals. To the right, a grid of blue, gray, and red dots connected by lines evokes a filtered file tree.

Built a tool to fix Claude Code's most annoying friction point: manually approving every Bash command. `mmi` "Mother May I" auto-approves known-safe commands (git status, pytest, ls) while blocking dangerous ones. Fail-secure default, full audit trail. github.com/dgerlanc/mmi
