In the best case, the plants benefit from partial shade and the panels generate slightly more electricity due to the evaporative cooling from the plants below. (I worked on Python code for those models but not the actual modeling of the system)

Project Drawdown modeled agrovoltaics, that in many cases the productivity of the land was for agricultural use is almost unchanged by solar or wind. Grains are not good because combines cannot be used, but crops with human pickers are almost unchanged.

I keep having to be reminded of how much Redditors delight in telling someone they are wrong without providing any help at all about how to get to a correct understanding.

We visited Niagara Falls in June, and got to walk down the Power Plant Tunnel out to see the falls from up close — which didn't exist as a tour when last we visited, it was full of water from the then-active old power plant. Good choice in your clickbaitery, top-notch.

I agree about it being the worst VAR decision. I mean, in 2026 anyone using VAR instead of LET and CONST deserves whatever consequences befall them.

Our car and home L2 charger do not have V2G, but I agree that VPPs become really interesting when it is a capability which one just gets when one has an EV and installs a home charger. That will grow VPP capacity much faster.

000

Denton Gentry @dgentry.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

Yes. It is fairly jarring that we paid more for the Powerwalls than we did for our Kia Soul EV, which has slightly more battery capacity: 33 kWh in Kia, 26 kWh in Powerwalls. Kia also threw in the whole rest of a car for free.

120

Denton Gentry @dgentry.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

$200 - $250 per year. The VPP alone will never pay for the Powerwalls. The Powerwalls supply our home first and only export extra capacity to the grid, so shifting our own excess solar generation to power the home during evening peak hours is the larger financial benefit. (also, power outages ofc)

120

Denton Gentry @dgentry.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

We had two Powerwalls installed in 2019 or so, and they've been part of the California VPP for a few years. We don't even notice when the batteries start supplying to the grid. It just happens. We're part of the massive daily shifting of excess solar to carry California through the day.

Good news: the thing I was concerned about, the thing I've kindof been a nervous wreck about, did not happen. A couple weeks of stress have just evaporated. The bad news is that I no longer have a convenient excuse to stress-eat ice cream late at night. I'll have to come up with a new excuse.
