As the November election nears, you’re going be fed a lot of polling data. Here’s a quick primer on how to interpret that information. The first thing to remember: Polls only offer a snapshot in time and cannot predict the future.

The 1967 Freedom of Information Act requires government agencies to make frequently requested info readily available to the public. In other words, you have access to lots of public info on both the federal and state level. Here’s my guide to some of the most useful sources.

The Social Security program is America’s most effective antidote to poverty. Despite its success at doing exactly what it was designed to do, Social Security has had many haters over the past century. But about 22 million Americans would be living below the poverty line without it.

Health insurance and better health are related, in a way that may not be obvious. The uninsured tend to stay away from doctors and hospitals until they are very sick. They are more likely to die from things that wouldn’t kill the rest of us. Now health insurance is about to get much more expensive.
