Margaret Hamilton has passed away. Here's a video showing a really cool tribute they did for her on the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7opr...

Where I live, non-profit status doesn't depend on religious affiliation or lack thereof. If you file the papers to show you're a nonprofit organisation, you don't pay taxes. Is it really different in other places?

Learning something is a mistake, and having the discipline to avoid repeating it, are two different things.

The cruelty is the point. It's not an accident that laws like this cause needless suffering. Needless suffering for those considered inferior is exactly what people who pass these laws want.

What is this 'dial' you speak of? Is that something the ancients used in the Before Time?

Three logicians walk into a bar. The bartender asks, 'Do you all want a beer?' The first logician says, 'I don't know.' The second logician says, 'I don't know.' The third logician says, 'Yes.'

Depends on the pot, n'est-ce pas? A ceramic casserole dish has no problems in the dishwasher. Also, casserole's a good choice for having company over. You can leave it in the oven to fend for itself while you entertain your guests.

I can see it working in a HHGTTG-style book: 'People had theories, all of them wrong. The actual goal was a back-scratcher for the Great Colossus, who would lay down on them and slide back and forth, but after he was abducted by aliens the project was never finished.'

I have no doubt it worked for like 99% of everybody. If we can have a better solution that works for 99.5% of everybody, then we should do that. Maybe we can't. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Some people want to give up before they even try. I've never understood that.

'Rare' does not mean 'zero'. I would not have any human being disregarded merely because their problems are rare. Everybody is somebody important.

The world is not simple. Not even counting trans people, there are problems. What about people who are XXY or XYY? What about Swyer Syndrome? People selling simple solutions to complex problems are nobody's friend. 'Good slogans are simple and clear. Reality is complex and murky.' - Steve Blair

I have never forgotten the feeling from _Prince Caspian_ when Aslan says 'No one is ever told what would have happened.' So many movies and stories are 'what if' tales, famously _It's a Wonderful Life_, and I was a kid reading and that may still be the biggest truth bomb that ever landed on me.

The thing is, honestly, I'm not sure AIs would do a worse job of running the world than we have. I'm not just sucking up in advance, hoping they'll keep me alive as a pet (though that would be nice). We've known about climate change for decades and done nothing. Maybe bots would do better.

It seems to me that some solution to trans women participating in sports should be possible, not that I know what it is, or that I blame anyone else for not having figured it out. I guess that means I would prefer an answer of 'maybe, but not yet' to an answer of 'no'.

I have recently learned that apparently some women starting college are advised that they should never enter a frat house at any time for any reason. If this advice were more widely shared, and followed, I suspect the fraternity system wouldn't last very long.

The DA says they never saw the group chat. Why do I suspect that if the victim had been the daughter of a billionaire, or a Senator, or the Governor, the DA would have actually investigated? Someone should ask: Is justice in NY only for the wealthy and powerful? If not, how did this happen?

I am continually astonished when the Trump Administration releases information about how much of our electricity comes from coal, as if 'We are a backwards country with poor leadership' is somehow a flex. Also astonished how many people seem to approve of the poor leadership.

It is so weird to me that Trump and his disciples keep thinking that 'We are unable to improve anything' is a flex. Were it up to them, we'd still be riding in steam trains powered by coal and watching black-and-white TV.

IIRC, the book _Superpuppy_ specifically recommends 'Guard the house!', not because the dog understands but because it makes the ritual of you leaving and coming back unique. You might say 'I'll be back soon' to someone on the phone or something and get the dog confused.

Don't forget the GOP Congress, which is as corrupt as Trump is. They could stop him, but they won't. Trump could order Seal Team Six to take out the entire Federal Judiciary and Mike Johnson would give his corrupt simpering smile and say that was strong leadership.
