Tremendous! Also, look how neat the Derry looks!

The visitors’ book in the Dens Park boardroom has collected its fair share of famous signatures over the years. But it's the very first entry that might be the most remarkable of all... 👀

During the curtailed 2020-21 COVID season, the club marked the reduced number of matches by reimagining classic programme covers with a modern twist. The initiative proved highly popular among supporters, and it is something I hope the club considers revisiting in the near future.

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

Although Dundee produced home match programmes during the 1962-63 European Cup run, none were issued for the European ties. Instead, the Evening Telegraph produced pictorial souvenirs which have since become the recognised programmes for these iconic games. 💙

010

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

The club occasionally departs from its standard cover design to recognise special events or individuals. Time and again, the covers produced for Remembrance have been among the most impactful.

010

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Recently, in 2023-24 and 2024-25, a light hearted approach was adopted with the introduction of Deeno on the cover. That brings us up to date, with the last two seasons reverting to the familiar player-photo design that has dominated matchday programmes for much of the past decade.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

The 2014-15 season introduced the concept of the Dark Blue Nation, and there were several strong efforts in the years that followed, with particular mention due to the 2017-18 and 2018-19 editions.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Then, in 2012-13, we were treated to not one but two eye-catching designs, including one of the standout programme covers of this century. Both will battle it out in the voting contest from tomorrow.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

2009 and what follows over the next few years is perhaps less inspiring and, in many ways, reflects the challenges the club faced both on and off the pitch during that period.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

2007-08 provided something a little different, with its gold font on a dark blue background, teasing us with what might have been had the rest of the cover followed the same approach.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

1998 brought a return to the big time in more ways than one. Promotion to the top flight coincided with the return of a bigger, fuller match programme for the SPL era. The downside? A decade of near-identical covers that can make seasons hard to tell apart.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

After 94 were frequent cover redesigns over a short space of time, coinciding with several cup runs during the mid-1990s. In my view, these were some of the most eye-catching covers of the era (with one notable exception!) and deserved to be showcased on a full-sized publication.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

In 1992-93, the programme underwent a reduction in size, and a variation on that theme remained in place for the club's centenary season in 1993-94.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

"The Dens Review" entered the 1990s with what has become an iconic cover featuring an unknown player. Team photos returned in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the latter sporting a striking tartan design. Was it linked to the launch of the Dundee FC tartan? 🤔

010

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

The 1988-89 cover itself went through several different guises over the course of the season. It began with team photographs, moved on to action shots, and eventually settled on imagery of the stadium itself.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Between 1983-84 and 1988-89, the programme effectively rebranded itself as a matchday magazine. The 1985-86 edition is particularly interesting, borrowing heavily, whether knowingly or otherwise, from the styling of football fanzines, a medium enjoying huge popularity at the time.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

The 1981-82 and 1982-83 editions saw an exploration of shapes, colours and typography. While the two designs were vastly different in appearance, they followed a remarkably similar underlying template.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

From 1978 to 1981, there was a delightful shift towards a front-page design that resembled a traditional team sheet. It prioritised information over bold visual impact and, personally, I'm a huge fan of that approach.

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Between 1975 and 1978, the programme's design focused heavily on player imagery, while also increasing the prominence of dark blue throughout the cover aesthetic. Never a bad thing!

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dundee FC programmes adopted a striking new look: solid dark blue covers paired with the iconic DFC badge. By the mid-1970s, however, collectors faced a challenge, as match details and opponents vanished from the cover entirely!

000

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Between 1947 and 1966, there were really only two (& a rare 3rd) cover designs in regular use. Both featured the Main Stand, viewed from different vantage points at the Provie Road End. They remain early classics, instantly evocative of the club's golden years.

010

DFC Historical Trust @dfchistorical.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

The inaugural 1946-47 Dundee FC programme still dazzles with its simplicity. Its clean, uncluttered design is helped by the inclusion of a wonderfully quirky image used as a humorous advert. Should we bring back this more spartan look and feel in the modern-day programme?

It's been a week marked by sadness following the passing of Billy Campbell and Gordon Wallace. Gordon's death comes poignantly on the eve of a match between two clubs to which he gave such loyal service. I was grateful for the chance to write about him for the programme in 2020.

On 8th March 1947, Dundee beat Alloa 10-0 at Recreation Park with Juliussen scoring a double hat trick. In their very next game Dundee beat Dunfermline by the same score line with Juliussen this time scoring seven! These remain Dundee's record victories to this day.
