Great book. But I feel he conflates self-awareness (or self-reflection, self-consciousness) with raw consciousness. It's entirely possible to be conscious with only a dim sensation of "I" -- or none at all. In short, our egoic sense of self could well be a "strange loop"... but not awareness itself.

Indeed! And, with that, you've hit upon the heart of the matter. We are completely existentially intertwined with Earth. Therefore, we're completely existentially intertwined with the Cosmos at large. We are symptomatic of it. To create us, you first need the entire Cosmos in place, just as it is.

Nah, "heaven" is a metaphor for the reunification of the egoic self with its deepest nature. We are little focal points of consciousness, that believe we're separate from everything (other people, nature, the cosmos). When we die, that illusion will collapse. Only oneness will remain.

Lovely to see some Alan Watts here. Lots of alignment with Carl Sagan. Alan said "we are the universe experiencing itself"; Carl said "we are a way for the universe to know itself". They came to the same conclusion, from different angles.
