WONDER

Wonder was the grace of the country. Any action could be justified by that: the wonder it was rooted in. Period followed period, and finally the wonder was that things could be built so big. Bridges, skyscrapers, fortunes, all having a life first in the marketplace, still drew on the force of wonder. But then a moment’s quiet. What was it now that was built so big? Only the marketplace itself. Could there be wonder in that? The size of the con?

Incredibly relatable

Q. How did your style as a writer emerge? Was it separate from or in tandem with your visual art?

A. By the time I got to be in high school, I wasn't really writing prose for fun anymore, like I did when I was a kid, and I sort of never really did again, other than the rare fanfic. So I don't have a sense of myself as a writer, except in nonfiction. I had a column in The Comics Journal for a little bit, writing comics reviews or writing essays and writing things for the school newspaper. My sense of my own voice as a prose writer is that it's really unpleasant. It's pedantic, it's convoluted. I mean, I can't help it. It's like, you've seen my tweets, but my prose is worse.
