Usually thinking about music & vinyl, often when I should be doing something else. I try and post a #TOTD using the 'random item' option on my #discogs #vinyl collection.

Dragged myself into the office today 'for the culture' to find I was the only mug in my team who was in. So I did the only sensible thing and stuck in my earbuds and caught up with some beautiful albums. Feels like we're in autumnal sad season judging by these choices.
Pentangle - Cruel Sister
Nick Drake - A Treasury
Laurie Anderson - Mister Heartbreak
John Martyn - Bless The WeatherLuke Una (compilation) - Everything Above The Sky
Lhasa - The Living Road
Gather In The Mushrooms (The British Folk Underground 1969 - 1975)
Joni Mitchell - Hejira

And lots of people are saying this is lazy dog-whistle politics, pandering to a narrow demographic of affluent, elderly Brexity white people who believe all the (very few) brown faces they see are up to no good but that is categorically not the case as we can see h...oh...hang on...wait...
The constituency is generally affluent with low levels of deprivation, especially so in Broadstone, Corfe Mullen and Merley which fall within the top 10% least-deprived areas in England.[2] The average house price in the constituency is higher than the national and South West England averages.[3]

Residents of Mid Dorset and North Poole are generally older with a large retiree population.[4] They have high rates of household income and the child poverty rate is low. Residents have average levels of education and are likely to be homeowners.[3] A high proportion work in the manufacturing and construction industries and the percentage of residents claiming unemployment benefits is low.[4][5] White people made up 97% of the population at the 2021 census.[6]

At the local council level, all of the constituency's wards are represented by Liberal Democrat councillors. An estimated 56% of voters in the constituency supported leaving the European Union in the 2016 referendum, higher than the nationwide figure of 52%.[3]

commentary rhythm under real-time constraints. One of the most common situations involves
metaphorical expressions used in English commentary to describe tactical behavior or match
situations. Such metaphors are often highly condensed and culturally familiar to Englishspeaking audiences but require adaptation when transferred into Uzbek. For instance:
English commentary: “They parked the bus.”
Uzbek translation: “Ular himoyaga yotib olishdi.”
Here, the original metaphor referring to extremely defensive play is not translated
literally. Instead, the Uzbek version replaces the metaphor with a functional description that
conveys the tactical meaning. The translator prioritizes clarity over metaphorical preservation,
ensuring that the audience immediately understands the defensive strategy being described. This

Also lol at this as the description still fits in within the normal range for residents of the IOW 🤣
Despite standing over 2 meters in height, the Sandown Clown had more or less normal human proportions: two arms, two legs, and a round head with identifiable facial features. The similarities to a normal human end there, however: the being's head was described as being too large for its otherwise thin frame, and shaped like a nearly perfect sphere. Its skin was very white, and had the consistency of paper, while its hands and feet possessed only three digits each, and its face seemed to have been crudely painted onto the surface of its head: two blue triangles seemingly represented eyes, while a flat brown rectangle served for a nose, and its mouth had thin yellow lips shaped like an oval, which did not move at all when it spoke or ate. Its hair hung down beneath its hat in sparse, frizzled, reddish-brown strands, and two wooden antennae stuck out from the sides of its head, while more wooden slat-like antennae extended from its wrists and ankles.

Even better (from this interview: www.theguardian.com/sport/2004/m...)
When did you first discover music?

When I was at school. I wasn't keen on the 'in' groups of the time like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Cockney Rebel, Yes, or Genesis; I was a bit more off the wall. Along with my mate Neil Rogers, I went for the next level of progressive music - bands like Soft Machine, Caravan and Gentle Giant. We used to go to concerts together wearing our Afghan coats. It was around this time in the early 70's I discovered Magma, my true obsession.

When was the first time you heard them?

It was at the Chalk Farm Roundhouse in London where I'd gone to watch the support act, Isotope. I was 17. I had planned to go home before Magma came on but I hung around and had the most musically life-changing experience of my life. I came out in shock; they blew me away. If I had a time machine and could go back to re-live one day of my life, it would be that one.

How would you describe their sound?

They are the musical equivalent of Marmite - you either like them or you don't. They were a Seventies phenomenon but a bit too far out there for most people, even if you liked progressive music. I didn't dare put them on the communal record player at sixth-form because they would have been booed off. Maybe it's because they were French.

Are you offended if people say they are rubbish?

No, I've learnt to keep my mouth shut. While I think they are the best thing I've ever heard - challenging, stimulating, powerful - my wife thinks they've got a pact with the devil. People generally just go: [puffs out his cheeks and shakes his head] sorry!Didn't you promote a concert for them?

In the late Eighties, I thought it would be nice if they came over to London to do a gig, so I set up Interesting Promotions to promote it. Well, I paid the bill is what I really mean. I never realised that there were 14 of them in the band, which raised the overheads slightly. They did three nights at the Bloomsbury theatre; the last night was a sell-out. I'd done my nuts [spent too much money], too, so it was great. Then I went back to [whispers] playing snooker.

Would you ever do it again?

Interesting Promotions sits there on the loss sheet, so probably not. What would be good, though, is if you could get all of the Canterbury jazz rock bands together and create a festival. They do a similar thing in America called Prog Fest.

So you must know Magma quite well now?

Yes, but I don't pester the life out of them. I admire them from afar. A couple of them came down to the snooker club with me when they were over and smashed a few balls around. The main guy, a jazz drummer called Christian Vander, is my hero. They had their 30-year anniversary in France a couple of years ago and it was brilliant. They are still making music and it's even better than before, I think.
