I did. Thanks.

It’s true. I’ve done both. Fakery feels right in the moment, but the lasting payoff is confidence in competence. It’s not a clever alliteration - just facts.

I’m almost sorry to ask, but no AI, right? I just went down a rabbit hole of finding out a series of reels I was interested in are generated using Showrunner and it made me queasy. My scepticism is running high.

I wasn’t aware that farmers and hunters needed clocks to read a particular time to go to work. I’m pretty sure they just fucking farm and hunt whenever they need to.

Ah the search for Noah’s ark - the grift that keeps on grifting. Even the explorers who believe in it don’t believe it’s been found. But then again, evangelical personalities never shy away from bilking impressionable pensioners and long term patients.

Maybe he gets his references from an LLM, whose source is an aggregator LLM, which gathered its sources from LLMs that were trained on data from LLMs.

This really is the crux of all media coverage of AI. There’s nothing new to say, and even if there were, the people saying it would be no more informed than people who have been living it for years. What a waste of time and space.

I've always wondered why tech CEOs keep warning about AI. It's not AGI they fear - it's a burst bubble. If I were them I might also want govt to put regs in place now so I can blame it for my lack of profitability later. How else can they survive the guillotine?

I think you’ve found the reason that ASOIAF isn’t finished. GRRM is playing the longest game of D&D ever trying to get the historical mechanics right, and it’s never going to end.

Ready access to AI seems to short circuit the critical thought process, specifically of how they’re confronting an expert. Question experts by all means, but don’t think a 10-second enquiry makes a machine more expert than a person who has spent years honing their expertise. Take a beat and reverse.

Look, SecDef is incompetent but this piece doesn’t tell us whether the programme was efficacious or fit for purpose. It was founded in response to failings in COIN. Who’s to say it had any applications for LSCO? Show us where it says that and we can get interested in its mission.

When Youngquist was kicking off I realised he wasn’t accounting for your Christianity. I smelled original sin in your meaning. I didn’t think drawing a target on it would’ve been very helpful.

I find this argument so much more plausible than the guy who accused Bret of being a liberal who was the actual fascist and also racist and also said “masturbation” a lot. God, what I wouldn’t do for more reasoned discourse.

Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
No, I don’t call people who work hard “lazy”. I’m not clear on who you’re referring to with the status argument but I guess I’m less informed than you. Anyway, I think you’d have to show a lot more than a Bluesky takedown to make that case here. Maybe write it up and get back to us?

I don’t actually know what the purpose of that sentence is. Feels good to say it and have it be seen? I’m trying to get some public history and I’m getting whatever that is. I’m done, folks.
110
Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
I read your interpretation of history as a competition between the cooperative and the coercive, and that we need to work against the latter to keep the former. Does it more or less boil down to that? Is there some deeper message I’m not getting?
120
Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
I don’t tend to ascribe laziness to people who do full PhDs, work as adjunct staff, write and write, and engage with these arguments. The guy thinks and communicates for a living so this doesn’t make any sense to me. Your argument just comes across as cynical and you haven’t shown me otherwise.
110
Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Thanks for clarifying. I’ve read quite a lot of Bret’s essays and this would be the first time I’ve seen any evidence of that prejudice, and you haven’t convinced me that’s what it is. Good luck with your argument.

Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
I don’t understand fella’s discourse. There’s a mismatch between clearly stated ideas and a mishmash of cultural references and passive aggressivism that’s blocking my view of what he’s driving at. I think I’m getting he thinks liberal=fascist also, but whatever the actual argument is has drowned.

Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
If nothing else, this discussion is a prime example of how public historians reach people. Two rounds of Hoi4 and a couple threads later and we’re at “where does fascism come from”?

Do you think they do as well, better or worse when it comes to other hardware, like cruisers, frigates and destroyers, or strike fighters and interceptors, or the different kinds of nuclear delivery systems?

I fear we’ve allowed marketeers to set the premise. These are not AI. They are LLMs and do not nearly approach critical analysis. We gotta stop talking about these programs like they’re anything more than the output of their programmers’ limited concept of intelligent design.

It's true - GOV.UK is a masterclass in design and clarity. I met one of its leaders in charge of copywriting and she genuinely seemed to care about how functional and accessible it is to people. If her attitude is anything to go by then the entire office dedicated to the site understands the brief.

It’s often really that leaders don’t care enough about quality CX. I’m an ex-CX head and with no luck re-entering the role bc many leaders think a biz dev with an LLM can offer equal service. And if not, as long as they’re still making deals then it must be OK to compromise on customer service.

In retrospect, it seems very unlikely that Hollywood could stomach the risk of a telling that doesn’t rely on modern Western heroics and redemption arcs to satisfy our collective escapist fantasies.

It’s entirely possible that the type of person who says she wants to translate The Odyssey a second time has a poor grip of the people skills needed to directly bring more people into the fold of the classics.

Iran’s regime don’t need any more reasons, but could there be other issues behind it? Could China be pressing them to hold out in order to create a downstream effect or some kind? Maybe the refinery bills you wrote about coming due right as they mobilise their forces for Taiwan?

Second for Brick Immortar. He just released his analysis of the Key Bridge collapse. It might be the first time I’ve watched one of an event I was already familiar with. It closes the loop very nicely.

We do better by framing all of us as strong in our own ways. It lends far more credibility to the concept of being stronger together, which is what we’re after. We need to keep searching for the common ground. It is actually out there, often face to face, not through impersonal discourse.

Trevor DeVooght @devtrev.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
I know what you mean, and I don’t see the need for framing public debates in these terms. If we do we have to ask “Weak at what?” Then public debate is already going off the rails. Better to stick to fundamentals and take issues on at their root than to muddle things with personal value judgments.

I had to use BibTex in concert with LaTex for a white paper ten years ago. It took some getting used to but I was glad for it in the end. Saying that, I had to input the citation data manually so I guess that’s still artisan, as well.

Devil’s advocate, I’ve heard some say it’s not unreasonable that Wayne didn’t jump headlong into the service. He knew the danger and had a family to look after. I think given the choice many of us would arrive at the same calculus. Human events are complex and sometimes unreasonably demanding.

To a generation that experienced some of history’s most brutal combat and atrocities, there was no question of their masculinity. Looking back, we know that manliness had no special claim to the virtues that brought survival and victory, but it was surely a motivator for many men.
