For the latter half of the 1800s, photographic printmaking made use of paper coated in salted albumen. Something thats awesome to do during a heatwave is to whip up two dozen egg whites and leave them uncovered at room temperature for two days

Whipping up a photographic meringue in bucket. Salt, acid, egg white- im samin nosrat

after two days most of the meringue has collapsed into a free-flowing liquid. most can be simply poured off into a beaker, but don't let any of the crusty froth get in. filter the last of the solution out from the froth with a coffee filter or a cotton ball stuffed into a funnel

Filtered solution in a brown glass bottle. This needs to be refrigerated for one week, and then can be stored at room temperature forever, essentially

Cyanotype just for the love of the game. You lose the swans in the texture of the paper so for a real print youd need to size the paper with albumen or gelatin

It's about 40 minutes of hands on time per plate, not including leaving it to dry like 3 times during the process. And the whole time you can't touch your phone

Cleaned glass plates drying in the Platypus 4x5 rack from Forster UK on ebay. check them out. I was certain the whole venture was fucked at this stage btw i was Not confident id cleaned the glass enough/right

This year ive been teaching myself the dry collodion process, out of an intense, unquenchable desire to spend as long as humanly possible taking a photo. Finally got enough sunlight to take a test shot and it was more successful than i could have imagined. I'm on cloud 9 with this. watch this space
