Goodreads tells me that I've now read 900 books since I started recording them in 2010 (though some predates that period). My 900th book was The Mermaid Of The Black Conch. An enjoyable read. I'll have to look back and pick out some favourites. What are you reading this weekend?

Just finished this. So much in there to think about, the debate about the justification for war an allegory for our internal struggle. Can be understood in many ways but the central idea of dharma, of selfless duty (?) is at its core. Next, the epic poem, The Mahabharata.

Hi all. I'm travelling again throughout July and part of August. So, together with small numbers of participants through these long summer evenings, I've decided to pause #devonbookhour . I'll let you know when it restarts. But we'll keep posting about books. Happy reading 🙂

I'm keen to read The Forbidden Forest by Rumanian writer Mircea Eliade but can't find it anywhere. If anyone knows where to get a copy (without breaking the bank!) I'd love to hear from you #devonbookhour

Am ploughing my way through my Goodreads TBR list (like you, no doubt, I have others). The first 2 are the last from my 2019 list and the next 3 from 2020. Many of my list have been your recommendations - if you've a wionderful book to add to my list, do tell me #devonbookhour

Fortunately, I absolutely loved Cry, The Beloved Country. A classic from SA writer, Alan Paton, I thought it was wonderful - understated, yet powerful. Again, anyone else read it? #devonbookhour

After a two week break I'm excited to hear your book news, especially any wonderful reads. I finished Umberto Eco's Foucaults Pendulum. I'd been wanting to read it for years and finally got to it - have to say I found it tough going. Anyone else read it? #devonbookhour

Happily completed my sailing course but am going to be back a few days later than originally planned so I'm afraid I won't be hosting #devonbookhour this evening. Hope you're all enjoying this wonderful sunshine.

#devonbookhour First book I read by Catriona was The Last House On Needless Street, I really enjoyed it as did all my family. My eldest daughter usually gets me the latest one for birthdays and Christmas. You'd probably like James Fearnley's memoir of his time in The Pogues, plenty of chaos.

#devonbookhour Catriona's book is about a young girl and her brother escaping an abusive home and 2 reporters investigating list children, only about a quarter way through it. It's interesting to find out how The Pogues came together which seems mostly to involve alchohol and arguments

A happy coincidence for this week's #devonbookhour for sure. Granada just got me in the pit of my stomach - very multicultural even now, and so much of the Moorish influence still evident in the architecture and the food. A nice size too: big enough to get lost in but not to overwhelm.

I recently read one of hers called The Hidden Target. Not bad as spy stories go tho’ dated way back to the late 1970s when Cold War politics were in full spate. She writes well and certainly draws characters with convincing ease if not depth. 📚 #devonbookhour

Gonzo journalism at its best. Tremendously talented writer, zero discipline. Really liked his Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail (speaking of 1970s books). #devonbookhour

I adore this book and yes it is a graphic novel. Definitely worth reading and I suspect it will be everywhere now she has just died.

I like both The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Girls of Slender Means although looking at dates, they were both written in the 60s rather than the 70s. She wrote a lot in the 70s as well

Now reading Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia- forget who recommended it here. 75% through. Enjoyed the building tension until it started to come to a head and, like many 'horror' stories, it's got a bit silly and I'm struggling a bit - what horror stories have worked for you? #devonbookhour

Finished reading How We Disappeared by Jing Jing Lee - based on true accounts of the 'comfort women' who were prisoners of the Japanese in WW2 Singapore. Very moving - especially the shame that made re-intigration so difficult after the war - a double torture. #devonbookhour
