Early morning visit to Wembury with @southdevonbirds.bsky.social hoping that the recent morning sea mists and increasing numbers of migrants might turn something up. The signs of migration ChiffChaffs in good numbers and 2 Sanderling on the beach. The star was a Wryneck flushed near Wembury Point

An after work visit to Colliford and Siblyback today the early evening light was fantastic and with the 2 Buff Breasted Sandpipers coming within 10m of those assembled it was pretty special. As where 3 Pectoral Sandpipers at Siblyback afterwards #birds

With nights drawing in and birding hours depleting, I watched this last night. I enjoyed watching new birders engaging in birdwatching in a tech enabled way. I also enjoyed how they weaved into the narrative, searching question around the ethics of what birders do #birds youtu.be/zl-wAqplQAo?...

My annual early start to pick up from Reading Festival. Burnham delivered large flocks of Dunlin & Ringed Plover, with Turnstone, Sanderling, Knot, Curlew-Sand and Little Stint among them. Ham Wall added Glossy Ibis and a late Hobby, and the day finished with 11 Stone-curlew at Winterbourne Downs.

Always have bins in the car! Dropped my family to the theatre in Torquay tonight and thought the strong westerly’s meant the bay was worth a look: Gannets, Kittiwake, Commin & Sandwich Terns in decent numbers from the harbour wall. The numbers of birds in the distance off Berry Head was awesome.

Not quite the last to see the Long Tailed Shrike, but given my refusal (self imposed) to twitch this bird from home, I used a detour back from my now annual Reading Festival drop off to go. Via Farmoor Res and Dix Pit nr Oxford. Male Ferruginous Duck was a treat at the later. 2 lifers one day #birds

I haven’t been down there since late Spring, and this is depressing, after years of Blaxton being barren of waders and wildfowl the last 10 years have seen it grow as an increasingly important liminal habitat. What gives @nationaltrust.org.uk

After anxiously watching other people sightings of the Broad Billed Sandpiper at Dawlish warren NNR. Managed some pretty good views of the bird at high tide on the Bight. Topped off with my first Sanderling and Grey Plover of 2026. A rewarding walk back along the beach before the train home. #birds

After a 2 hour search on Friday 8th May I finally found 2 Dingy Skipper at a site in Plymouth, sadly they will now be the last I will see here as the site will shortly have houses built on it #ukbutterflies

Gravel or keys in my pocket? Merlin had it sorted. South Dartmoor today…..Blue Rock Thrush! As long as we are active and aware in our use of Ai, it is an enabler…..I wouldn’t go back

Working my patch today up on the southern fringes of Dartmoor north of Plymouth. There are fragments of Atlantic rainforest even here. I saw single pairs of Redstart and Pied Flycatcher, which are always a privilege to spend time with. #birds

Turns out from a local, I spoke to in the village the same bird has been coming back to the site for the last 3 years. Calling and flight displaying, but to no end. More than a bit sad really

I am in Leicestershire for work at present, but to be woken by the sound of a Turtle Dove outside my accommodation this morning was special. A bird I have not seen in the UK for over a decade. (Sound up) #birds

Great day up in Somerset yesterday at RSPB Ham Wall, NNR Shapwick and RSPB Greylake. All the birds one might expect with over 75 species on the day list. The highlight at least 8 Hobby’s as well as one of the Knepp White Storks on Tealham and two Cranes a Greylake which gave great views #birds

Whimbrel day, today started with a single bird at Firestone Bay, Plymouth, before work this morning. Tonight I went to South Milton and despite their only being a single Whimbrel, Yellow Wagtail and Bar Tailed Godwit on the marsh, the vis-mig saw a further twenty seven Whimbrel flying over. #birds

For a bird of which there have been fewer than ten mainland UK records, which on average have a max stay of two days, I was at Chapel Amble at dawn this morning to see this Kildeer. Life ticks are harder to come by once you reach 300 so had to make the trip. ✅ #birds #cornwall

From Moor to shore this afternoon, despite the lack of spring like weather, it is here. Goshawk and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker at Yarner after drawing blank last weekend. Onto Slapton and Beesands with 60+ Sand Martin over the Leys. Then this beauty showed well at Beesands #birds #devon #dartmoor

On my way back from some training in East Devon I took the opportunity to drop in on RSPB Aylesbere. I only had 30 minutes before sunset but struck lucky with good views of Dartford Warbler with a second scratching out it’s song in the distance. #birds @rspb.bsky.social

A weekend away in Somerset, not birding, but is really such a thing. Dawn walk at Chard Res. this morning, Firecrest, Marsh Tit and the increasingly ubiquitous GWE. On our way home into Seaton to see two Black Redstarts & one of the two Eastern Lesser Whitethroats that are overwintering there #birds

Sat in the blustery rain on the end of Brixham Pier, to see the BT Diver in the bay. Up to 10 GND too. Purple Sandpiper and Med Gull moulting into summer plumage nice too. Despite much searching not able to find Caspian Gull. Finished with a brief visit to Broadsands to see Cirl Bunting #birds

I am pleased to see research published. I have anecdotally been observing this trend for a number of years, relaying the disappointing irony of this to my colleagues. It speaks to the disconnect between a perceived nation of “nature lovers” and in one of the most nature depleted places on earth.

One of my favourite books is Wild America, the 1953 trip made by legendary naturalists Roger Tory Peterson (USA) and James Fisher (UK). Some of it was filmed and RTP took that on tour to theaters across the States. Until today, that was the only opportunity to see it (1/2) youtu.be/irjm8dxb0xA?...

Definitely the calm after the storm in SE Cornwall and took advantage of the glassy water to go looking for grebes at St John this afternoon. Not a five grebe day but Little, Great Creasted, Black Necked and Slavonian made it a four grebe day, is still a good day! #birds
