I’m a little tired of the idea Alan Moore got it in the neck over Watchmen. He wasn’t self publishing and it was a huge deal. His opening salvo on the Twilight pitch opens not with story ideas but merch concepts. Neal Adams was the guy in the trenches everyone thinks Moore was

So: Alan Moore was caught with his foot in the door of an emerging new retail model, in which the very book that he had produced with the understanding that it would not be in print forever would go on to be in print forever. And there was going to be no making good on that given the understanding that Watchmen was a money printer. It's still a money printer, for that matter. Ultimately the crappy sequels and even more profoundly crappy DC Universe crossover, nor even its creator's profound sorrow, could dim its star.
It still sells better than just about anything else.
Maybe even more than Hush, which is a lot.
And that's the original sin at the heart of Vertigo.
That's also the reason why the next generation of writers to follow in Moore's proverbial footsteps got the red carpet treatment in perpetuity. I'm sure nothing bad would ever come of feeding the egos of the pale narcissists who write the comic books.

FROM THE AUDIENCE: Do you actually own Watchmen?
MOORE: My understanding is that when Watchmen is finished and DC have not used the characters for a year, they're ours.
GIBBONS: They pay us a substantial amount of money...
MOORE: ... to retain the rights. So basically they're not ours, but if DC is working with the characters in our interests then they might as well be. On the other hand, if the characters have outlived their natural life span and DC doesn't want to do anything with them, then after a year we've got them and we can do what we want with them, which I'm perfectly happy with.

Okay... I'm sure this is going to be an interminable ramble as these things usually are, but I first want to set down my thoughts on the whole idea of mass crossovers, partly in response to Paul's letter on the subject and partly just to clarify my thinking for myself.
Hopefully, somewhere along the line you might catch a glimpse of some of the logic behind the story outline that follows and will thus be able to make a little more sense of my reasons for doing it that way.
Firstly, as I see the commercial side, taking into account what Paul was kind enough to pass on to me, the perfect mass crossover would be something like the following: it would have a sensible and logical reason for crossing over with other titles, so that the readers who were prompted to try a new title as a result of the crossover or vice versa didn't feel cheated by some tenuous linkage of storylines that was at best spurious and at worst nonexistent. It would provide a strong and resonant springboard from which to launch a number of new series or with which to revitalize old ones again in a manner that was not obviously crassly exploitative so as to insult the reader's intelligence.
With an eye to the merchandising that Marvel managed to spin out of Secret Wars, I think it's safe to assume that if it were possible to credibly spin role playing games, toys, "Waiting for Twilight" posters and T-shirts and badges and all the rest of that stuff from the title, then that would be a good idea too. Ideally, it might even be possible, while appealing to the diehard superhero junkie, to produce a central story idea simple, powerful and resonant enough to bear translation to other media. I mean, I know that I'm probably still intoxicated by the Watchmen deal, but it never hurts to allow for these things as a possibility, does it?

I think the part where he talks about mutilating someone for the hypothetical crime of automating Devil Daggers gives the game away here. This isn’t a considered critique, it’s the sort of reactionary “how dare you mess with MY games” anger we must all confront within ourselves.

If somebody automated Devil
Daggers, I would stab them in the hands with a barbeque fork. If somebody automated Tetris, I would have them arrested. When a designer of a racing game makes drifting round corners feel the perfect balance of scrapey and buttery, this feeling can carry the entire racer despite how bad its story mode inevitably is. On the other hand, when somebody strips an essential verb out of Asteroids and claps on an incremental skill tree, I can't help but feel they have piggybacked on the physical feeling unlocked by bygone engineers to deliver what is effectively Cookie Clicker under the hood. This is not a revolutionary new form. It is Candy Box sans the sense of humour, with a lobotomised arcade classic attached.

I think this really cuts to the core of the article’s deep faults. Playing straight Breakout in 2026 is an agonising test of your ability to deal with pointless semi-random busywork. In their native arcade form bullet hells take hours and hours and substantial financial “investments” to 1CC

The self-playing game automates a primary verb of play. That is a fancy way of saying: Me no shoot, game shoot for me. It then gets you as fast as possible onto a trundling treadmill of dopamine and ostensible progress, while sort of reminding you of another game you played before. The physicality of this "kernel" genre underneath is not really needed. It just needs to look like bullet hell. It just needs to seem like Breakout. They can become lauded, successful games, praised for their addictive charms and approachability.
