In the vein of (literally) seeing something in a different light, possibly the cute bat looks different under shadow: eyes are narrowed with an unearthly glow, teeth are too long, the shadow they cast seems to devour light, etc.

I'm not the best when it comes to the language of visual design, but perhaps what you could play on is the spaces between subtle shifts? There's a lot you could do with eyes and teeth alone; cute and welcoming open eyes can become wild and terrifying, a smile can be a grin, a smirk, a snarl...
