Oo those are great questions! my main reference point for semantic zooming is Cockburn's survey: faculty.cc.gatech.edu/~stasko/7450... and §7.2 collects a few high-level studies which might have partial answers your Qs (but it's definitely an understudied interaction pattern!)
A table of evaluations for semantic zooming. There are three columns: Author & Year, interaction techniques (Overview + Detail, Zoom, Focus + Context), and a description of the evaluation.

The original figure (from Curry's Programming by Abstract Demonstration). It has a bunch of figures that show steps over time and are pretty inscrutable on their own.
A figure from a paper. It has four rows, each row shows an operation on a "stack" data structure. Each operation is shown as a sequence of stop-motion screenshots.A series of steps showing an interface which computes something. I don't quite understand it yet.

Animated a figure from an old programming-by-demonstration paper :)

A lil' fractal that looks like stained glass :)
A picture of a fractal that looks like stained glass in the shape of five curved claws coming out of the center. The bottom right states the set of equations for the fractal:

x = x - floor(t * f(x, y))
y = t * g(x, y)
x = x - t * f(x, y)

f(x, y) = y + 0.1 * sin(x)
g(x, y) = x - 0.1 * cos(y)
t = 0.64Same as previous image, except this time the claws are connected. The equation states: t = 0.79Eight colorful tendrils emanating from the center. The equation states: t = 0.392
