On September 15, 2012, the Belle Isle Aquarium reopened after a seven-year closure due to budgetary constraints. Dating back to 1904, the Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest public aquarium in the continental United States and, at the time of its opening, the third largest in the world.

Look for our 1910 Packard Rescue Wagon on display this weekend at Cars at the Station, as the event recognizes the 25th anniversary of 9/11. This was DFD's 1st rescue vehicle used by its "Flying Squad" & recognized as the oldest unrestored (in original condition) Packard fire truck in existence.

On August 28, 1924, the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co. steamboat Greater Detroit embarked on her maiden voyage from Detroit to Buffalo. This advertising card notes that the vessel was 550 feet in length, contained 650 staterooms and parlors, and traveled at a speed of 21 miles per hour.

On August 27, 1902 the Cadillac Automobile Company was launched out of the remnants of Henry Ford's second, failed business. Its founder, Henry Leland, convinced former Ford board of directors that he could create a viable company, using a motor he had developed for the Olds Motor Vehicle Company.

On August 26, 1950, Ransom E. Olds died in Lansing, Michigan at 86 years old. His use of the assembly line, though stationary not automated, and his early development of a successful auto model led many to consider him the father of the automobile.

7/30/1975: #JimmyHoffa, the influential labor leader & former Teamsters president, vanished after going to meet associates near Detroit. Presumably the victim of an organized crime hit, no trace of him has ever been found, and he was declared dead on July 30, 1982. #truecrime #disappearances

On July 28, 1942, this photo was taken during the Davison construction project, showing the nearly completed Woodward Avenue bridge over the freeway. The Davison, which runs east-west between M-10 and Interstate 75, was arguably the first urban freeway constructed in the United States.

On July 23, 1967, a police raid on a "blind pig" on 12th Street led to several days of civil unrest in Detroit. In 2017, we partnered with 100+ organizations to mark the 50th anniversary with a community engagement project, museum exhibition, and collection of written, audio, and video histories.
