A poem in plain white text on a plain black background. It reads:

"I hate the way the crossword leers at me. All scleras and pupils, no irises. I grip my pen tightly (I don't allow myself the comfort of erasure).

The numbers laugh at me. I crave to be 1-across but am relegated to 49-down -- only relevant under dire circumstances.

My jagged nib plunges into the paper against my will, because I can't bear the criticism. Better the page than me.

Ink gushes over the letters, the black-and-white enigma in tatters. Splotchy, battered, ruined -- a mirror image.

As it bleeds from the mouth, it begs and pleads, fittingly unintelligible for a wordless word puzzle."
