The Florov 4302 was one of the Soviet Union's last serious attempts to develop a rocket-powered interceptor before turbojet technology rendered the concept obsolete. www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #aeroplane #Aircraft #airplane #aviation #Florov4302 #rocket #rocketplane
The Florov 4302 was one of the Soviet Union’s last serious attempts to develop a rocket-powered interceptor before turbojet technology rendered the concept obsolete. Designed by Ilya Florov at the same design bureau that had produced the pioneering Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1, the aircraft represented a significant advance over its wartime predecessor. Development began in 1944, although the first prototypes were not completed until after the Second World War.

The 4302 was an all-metal shoulder-wing monoplane with straight wings featuring sharply drooped outer wing panels. These downward-angled wingtips were intended to improve lateral stability and reduce wingtip vortices. The aircraft also incorporated small endplate fins on the horizontal tailplane, a distinctive feature inherited from earlier Soviet rocket aircraft research. The fuselage was compact and highly streamlined, reflecting the designers’ emphasis on achieving the highest possible speed with limited rocket endurance.

Three substantially different prototypes were built during 1946–47. The first, designated 4302/I, lacked conventional landing gear and was carried aloft beneath a Tupolev Tu-2 before being released for powered flight. After completing its mission, it landed on a retractable skid. This approach simplified the aircraft and reduced weight while allowing engineers to evaluate its aerodynamic characteristics.

The second prototype, 4302/II, introduced a detachable launch trolley, allowing independent take-off under rocket power. Powered by a single-chamber Alexei Isayev liquid-fuel rocket engine producing approximately 10.8 kN of thrust, it achieved a recorded speed of 826 km/h (513 mph) at an altitude of 5,000 metres during tests in August 1947. Test pilot A. K. Pakhomov conducted much of the aircraft’s flying programme, demonstrating satisfactory handling despite the aircraft’s extremely high thrust-to-weight ratio and short powered flight duration.

The Polikarpov I-153DM was a Soviet experimental fighter combining the Polikarpov I-153 “Chaika” biplane with ramjet propulsion. www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #aeroplane #Aircraft #airplane #aviation #biplane #PolikarpovI153DM #ramjet #RamjetPoweredBiplane
The Polikarpov I-153DM was one of the Soviet Union’s most unusual experimental fighter aircraft, combining the proven Polikarpov I-153 “Chaika” biplane with pioneering ramjet propulsion. The suffix DM, short for Dopolnityelnyi Motor (“supplementary engine”), referred to the installation of two underwing ramjet engines designed to boost the aircraft’s speed without replacing its conventional piston engine. Developed in 1940, the project reflected Soviet interest in advanced propulsion systems during the years immediately preceding the widespread introduction of turbojet aircraft.

The standard I-153 was powered by a Shvetsov M-62 radial engine driving a two-bladed propeller and was renowned for its exceptional manoeuvrability despite its biplane configuration. Engineers fitted experimental Merkulov DM-2 and later DM-4 gasoline-burning ramjets beneath the lower wings. Unlike turbojets, ramjets contain no moving compressor and rely entirely on the aircraft’s forward speed to compress incoming air. As a result, the ramjets could not operate from take-off and only became effective after the aircraft had reached sufficient speed under piston-engine power.

Flight testing demonstrated that the concept worked. Aircraft fitted with the smaller DM-2 ramjets achieved an increase in maximum speed of approximately 30 km/h (19 mph), while the more powerful DM-4 installation produced gains of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). A total of 74 experimental flights were conducted, proving that auxiliary ramjets could provide a measurable performance improvement without fundamentally altering the aircraft’s design.

Despite these encouraging results, the I-153DM remained an experimental aircraft. The additional engines increased weight, drag and maintenance complexity, while the modest improvement in performance could not compensate for the rapid advances being made in monoplane fighter and turbojet technology. Consequently, the programme was abandoned in favour of more modern aircraft.

Nikitin-Shevchenko IS Polymorphic Fighter. Designed with a retractable lower wing to change from biplane to monoplane in flight. www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #aeroplane #Aircraft #airplane #aviation #fighter #NikitinShevchenkoIS #polymorphic #polymorphicfighter
The Nikitin-Shevchenko IS (Istrebitel Skladnoi – “Folding Fighter”) was one of the most unconventional Soviet fighter aircraft projects of the Second World War era. Designed by Vasily Nikitin and test pilot Vladimir Shevchenko, the aircraft was conceived in the late 1930s as a “polymorphic fighter” capable of transforming between a biplane and a monoplane during flight. The concept aimed to combine the excellent take-off, climb, and manoeuvrability of a biplane with the superior speed and lower drag of a monoplane.

The aircraft featured a unique retractable lower wing. During take-off and landing, the IS operated as a conventional sesquiplane, with the lower wing providing additional lift. Once airborne, the landing gear retracted into the lower wing, after which the entire wing folded upward into recesses beneath the fuselage and upper wing. The complete transformation took only a few seconds and was controlled by a simple three-position lever in the cockpit. This ingenious mechanism allowed the pilot to choose the most suitable configuration for different phases of flight.

The first prototype, designated IS-1, was powered by a Shvetsov M-63 radial engine and armed with four 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns mounted in the upper wing. Flight testing demonstrated that the folding-wing mechanism worked reliably, validating the engineering concept. A second prototype, the IS-2, incorporated a more powerful M-88 radial engine, a slimmer fuselage, and heavier armament consisting of two 12.7 mm Berezin BS machine guns and two ShKAS guns. Plans also existed for more advanced IS-3 and IS-4 variants fitted with even more powerful engines and improved aerodynamics.

Despite its technical success, the polymorphic fighter failed to outperform contemporary Soviet monoplanes such as the MiG-3 and Yak-1, whose simpler designs offered superior speed and were easier to manufacture. The Nikitin-Shevchenko IS (Istrebitel Skladnoi – “Folding Fighter”) was one of the most unconventional Soviet fighter aircraft projects of the Second World War era. HTMS Sukhothai was a gunboat of the Royal Siamese Navy, built in the United Kingdom by Vickers Armstrong in Barrow-in-Furness. Laid down in December 1928 she was launched in 1929 and entered service in December 1930. The vessel formed part of Siam’s efforts to modernise its naval forces during the reign of King Vajiravudh and the early years of King Prajadhipok.

Designed primarily for coastal defence and patrol duties, HTMS Sukhothai displaced around 1,000 tonnes and was armed with a battery of medium-calibre naval guns suitable for protecting Siam’s coastline and maritime approaches. Although modest in size compared with contemporary cruisers and destroyers, she represented a significant enhancement of Siam’s naval capabilities and was among the most modern warships in the fleet at the time of her commissioning.

Throughout her career, Sukhothai undertook routine patrols, training exercises, and ceremonial duties. She served during a period of considerable political and military change in Siam, including the 1932 revolution that transformed the country from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy.

The gunboat remained in service until she was stricken in 1971.

HTMS Thonburi was a coastal defence ship of the Royal Thai Navy, named after the historic Kingdom of Thonburi. www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #coastaldefenceship #HTMSThonburi #maritimehistory #Military #NavalHistory #RoyalThaiNavy #Thonburi #warship
HTMS Thonburi was a coastal defence ship of the Royal Thai Navy.

The ships were laid down at Kawasaki’s facilities in Kobe in 1936, and Thonburi was launched on 31 July 1937. Displacing 2,265 tons, the vessel featured increased armour protection over her predecessors and was powered by twin MAN diesel engines from Germany. Her main armament consisted of four 8-inch (203 mm) guns mounted in two twin turrets — the same type fitted to early Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruisers, and reportedly surplus weapons left over from Japanese modernisation efforts. She was commissioned into the Royal Thai Navy on 31 January 1938, with a complement of 234 officers and men.

Thonburi’s moment of glory and catastrophe came on 17 January 1941, during the Franco-Thai War. A French squadron commanded by Capitaine de Vaisseau Régis Bérenger, comprising the light cruiser Lamotte-Picquet and several avisos, approached the Ko Chang anchorage at dawn, splitting into three groups to maximise firepower while blocking Thai escape routes.

At 06:38, lookouts aboard Lamotte-Picquet spotted Thonburi heading northwest at a range of 10,000 metres. A running battle ensued, with fire from both ships frequently obscured by the towering islets. The Thai ship’s fire was heavy but inaccurate. Early in the engagement, a lucky shot from Lamotte-Picquet killed Thonburi’s captain, Commander Luang Phrom Viraphan, throwing her operations into disarray.

By 07:15, fires were visible on Thonburi. She eventually reached the safety of shallow water, which the French ships could not enter for fear of grounding, but Thonburi was already burning fiercely and listing heavily to starboard. The fire crept dangerously close to the ship’s magazine, forcing the crew to flood it to prevent an explosion. Unable to contain the blaze, the decision was made to have HTMS Chang tow Thonburi and run her aground at Laem Ngob. The official death toll aboard Thonburi was 20 crew members killed.
