#duckdb users on this app all post like they're in the same prayer room wearing robes and chanting. why are they putting out release info like it's a cryptic ARG where I have to uncover some cosmic horror? i bet motherduck is actually a front to summon a large Flesh Sphere

more like boomer tests. truly frictionless development is feeding all the code directly into deepgrungleGPT and asking if it would pass a unit test "if it tried really hard" before pushing to prod

Choroplethr is Scheduled to be Archived from CRAN
I was just notified by CRAN that choroplethr is scheduled to be archived on February 12. The reason is that choroplethr depends on the acs package, and the acs package is being archived. Apparently…

im archiving terabytes of gov data today, but also looping through every .xlsx with openpyxl to convert their styles to Comic Sans. this maintains my net-zero karma policy #databs

you gotta stop playing with me man. I should not be allowed anywhere near this data warehouse. my code reads like a demented grimoire. my dags are ten billion gnarled fingers grasping at smoke. I should be sealed away in the moon for my crimes against cloud computing

if you work in #databs long enough your eyes eventually turn milky white and you are granted the clairvoyant ability to see the precise time of death of any dashboard you gaze upon

no books for me, I just used sites like pgexercises.com. W3schools, Mode, sqlzoo wiki and sqlbolt all have decent lessons/exercises as well

I was able to fit R into a non-tech startup for ad hocs that never needed to be reproduced, but that's not the norm. In bigger companies I see some finance/business analysts who are more focused on forecasting and exploratory work that could easily use R as their primary tool.
120
desqry @desqry.bsky.social · 18/12/2024
R tends to just be a nice-to-have, while the others (or just SQL) are usually the primary tool. that is more true the closer you get to a normal org and their standard "data analyst" role. the less normal the role and org the more often you can use it

lots of #dataBS nerds build pipelines cause it makes them "engineers" who "get paid" with "money". I do it cause I only belong in the sewer where the pipes are like a filthy little RAT

I got to be the first data person at a startup with beginner technical skills. The difference for me was learning a wide variety of things on a shallow level v.s. a small variety of things deeply.

#databs thrilled to share I have accepted a new role where I will be wandering through the data warehouse as a Blind Idiot God, leaving a trail of n rows affected from whence I devour, and deleting Tableau dashboards at random.

#databs tip: I don't use AI, docs, or stackoverflow when I have SQL questions. Instead, I shoved 80k lines worth of scripts into a folder named "The Great Old One" and just use grep to receive Its primordial whispers

boarsky and datasky crossover episode - this is my favorite excerpt about how scary they are
010
desqry @desqry.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
agreed - & my view is particularly biased because most of my clients leadership had not dealt with A/B/prop tests before, so they struggled navigating it. More dangerous though were the folks who used it as a way to attribute more $x/+% to themselves, while really just grasping at random variance.
110
desqry @desqry.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
I was consulting saas with products that pushed A/B hard during this time so I saw that play out with a lot of companies. I'm sure people here were involved with smarter orgs than I, but for the avg team, AB were harmful or nearly net 0 benefit.

desqry @desqry.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
1. People who didn't really understand the stats didn't want to argue against them and reveal that to their peers, so they mostly just agreed with the results. 2. Arguing for a critical thought v.s. p<0.05 meant arguing against the need to do these tests at all "why do the test if we ignore results"
110
desqry @desqry.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
AB obsession really had businesspeople using 0% of their business acumen, if any existed at all. Testing important things meant decision makers not making decisions and testing unimportant things was either misguiding or not worth the wage spend reviewing results in the first place.

every small-mid sized data org ive met has a "do not turn this off" computer where scheduled tasks live, if they can't live anywhere else. It might just belong to one small team or shared between a couple people but there is always one.
