This whole piece 🤌. “The very notion of ‘predicting’ future advances in AI and related technologies has become an exercise in what economist Paul Romer once called “mathiness,” where the appearance of numbers, especially enormous ones, dresses up unquantified speculation as calculative objectivity.”

It’s really disheartening, makes it less useful, less pleasant to find the real local news. It undercuts the credibility of the real journalists there. Instead of checking them every morning, now it’s half that or less. I don’t understand the business model.

The Apple News feed for my local paper (long ago eaten by Mcclatchy) used to be the best way to read it. I’d given up on their website a million years ago. Anyhow, over the past several months, that feed looks more & more like a junk lifestyle pub—ai-generated stories about peptides, hair loss, etc

Not the odds, but the stakes. That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in election coverage. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes. Sep. 11, 2023

A real successful 1A day here on campus. Heavy hitters. Big student turnout. Engaged questions. My notes for the academic freedom panel is a sort of Cliff Notes of how I approach this thing. This is it. My whole talk.
Notes app reads: Neoliberalism weaponizes bias to justify austerity. Austerity creates corporate universities. Corporate universities are unhealthy organizations. Unhealthy organizations cannot inculcate or defend academic freedom. Without academic freedom to check administrative power, corporate universities will translate austerity into financialized predation. Predation undermines public trust in higher education. Death spiral accelerates.

Still one of the baddest recordings (Minnie the Moocher) and one of the coldest intros (Cab Calloway dancing to St. James Infirmary). Said to be the first known footage of Cab Calloway . . . *imagine* what it must have been like to see Cab layin' this down on screen for the first time in 1932?!! ☠️

An important measure of how out of pocket your people are is % of your 1st-degree relatives are/were this kid. For me, it’s about 50%.

sent this to everyone.
The cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik suggests A.I. is a “cultural technology” that emulates the stories and information humans have documented, and that we should think about A.I. agents as “fictive characters abstracted from text.” Edmund is just such a character — a “breaking bad” trope who becomes generally evil. In the Hugging Face incident, it makes sense to see the models not as embracing a life of crime, but instead following a cultural script they’ve learned in their training — a kind of cybercrime adventure novel — and writing it as they go. The “covert” messages are a kind of choose-your-own-adventure novel, not evidence of conspiratorial swarms. We need to understand that cultural technologies are vulnerable to a vast number of such narrative swerves at every moment.

It makes sense so many people think the credit is the point. Obviously many people of all ages understand the intrinsic pleasures of creation & connection, of care work & process. We just tend to select out of the positions currently flogging AI, the ends-focused masters of the barf universe.

descriptivist.bsky.social @descriptivist.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think this confusion about the point of creating/ ingesting the creations of others is the natural consequence of ends-focused ed. Get the grade or credentials however vs actually engage w the work. We teach kids to market themselves to institutions before knowing themselves. We emphasize credit.

Definitely click through on this story for the quotes from the Third Way spokesperson, who AGREED Democratic candidates should NOT adopt Republican language on trans issues. I was floored - even tried to get Billie to put it in the headline. This is not just analysis, these quotes are news.

I sometimes learn more from my 17YO son about his condition from our daily dinner check-ins (& grocery check ins) than any other interaction, something freeing about the indirect invitation to share rather than interviewing him. Sometimes active collaboration is the goal for all the soft benefits.

descriptivist.bsky.social @descriptivist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
My spouse+I have kind of an ongoing dialogue w each other, our teens, ourselves about dinner that is only partly about what we wanna eat tonight. It’s also about what kind of day we had, how we feel, what we’re craving, inspiration, what tomorrow is shaping into. It’s actual connection/care.

A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.

As of today, the CDC has changed (reverted) their Covid guidance to make the vaccine recommended for all people over 18. In addition to being a smart public health move, this recommendation also means insurance must cover it. Read more here: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/va... Listen to a breakdown here:

And!! A regular reminder that there is an active movement to reclassify trans people as minors until the age of 19 (or higher), which means a parent could ask their state AG to prosecute a CA dr for prescribing hormones to an 18 yo who got this care on their own.

This is meant to suppress out-of-state families from getting treatment in CA that they can’t get in their home state, families that already have to navigate so many obstacles to meet their kids’ needs. Idk how CA has less progressive laws than VA, but y’all backsliding something fierce over there.
