Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 03/10/2026This is a great point. We had a lawyer speaking @bildnercenter.bsky.social last week who suggested that material support for terrorist could be litigated by victims. Are you aware of any cases where victims of Mexican DTOs have sued US gun dealers for damages? 130
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 30/09/2026I'm not sure how much these satellite campuses help the core university mission or the students. Students in Miami are not often exposed to central university faculty. It is hard to build relations among students. Research opportunities are limited. The main library is on the home campus. 000
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I don't think I have gotten anyone to pick up in Manhattan either though they do let me leave a voice mail. 001
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Very cool. I did not know there was a German mate flavored soft drink. When I lived in Brazil, non-carbonated mate drinks were popular. Did you get in in NYC? 000
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I found Black Leopard, Red Wolf difficult and not very interesting. Brief History was amazing. Just started The Disappears and it was immediately captivating. I like how James shows the details of Jamaican social life across classes. Black Leopard, of course, was missing that. 000
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 10/09/2026A great day for beginning and ending educational cycles. My kids were up early for school. Then I came to campus for the dissertation defense of a student I met online during the pandemic. 010
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 10/09/2026This is an interesting finding. In Latin American politics research there is an expectation articles will site local language sources. It has been a frequent peer review topic for a long time. Why do you think some "jihadism research" relies so heavily on English-language sources? 110
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Thanks for making this point. This is generally an issue for all academic conferences happening in the US right now and for those of us hosting events. APSA has been very much behind and often tone deaf in addressing the threats facing the political system here. 020
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Good point. Perhaps I am extending the administration some of the same credit I would have extended in the past. 010
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Thank you. This is something few draw attention to. The administration doesn't seem to believe that high education is an industry that contributes to economic growth both in preparing students for the workforce but also simply by generating business activity. 110
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 27/08/2026What a waste of talent and opportunity. Perhaps if the administration had consulted with people trained in the social sciences, like diplomats and economists, it could have avoided the Iran war and the trade wars, which are damaging its standing among the electorate. 1123
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I agree. The university where I teach has worked for years to improve transfers within our system. States might be able to achieve this over the medium term especially with this type of financial incentive. 010
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 26/08/2026What a great place to work on Mexican politics! Good luck hiring. 010
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Thanks for posting this. Your approach seems like a good start to addressing the challenges faced by many universities across the country. The plan, though, requires meaningful safeguards so the federal government cannot use the funding system to impose curriculum or free speech limitations. 110
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 20/08/2026I am surprised the NSF staff thinks we don't know they are not making new awards. As a former grantee from the security program I am very aware of the lack of funding. 1131

Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 08/07/2026That is an awesome novel. I particularly like the T. Rex song references. And the humor. 000
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I agree here. The report is unsourced and has no details. "Big if true" but certainly waiting for more information. 010

Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 07/05/2026Kids in New York City definitely can get around more than kids elsewhere in the US. Built environment and public transportation make a big difference. 020

Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 02/03/2026What appears to be the imposition of an unwanted demonym to a US citizen is an effort by many Latin Americans to challenge the appropriation of a culturally and politically valuable supernational demonym 5/ 050
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 02/03/2026Today in Latin America, US citizens and officials are referred to, legally and formally, as Estdado Unidense. United Statesian or USian is a translation of this. Spend enough time there and it feels normal, at least when you say it in Spanish or Portuguese. 4/ 050
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 02/03/2026Americano is a broader demonym that has longstanding cultural valence in Latin America. In his efforts to promote a continental decolonization movement, Simon Bolivar referred to the inhabitants of the region “Americanos” in his 1815 “Letter from Jamaica,” an text in Latin American independence. 3/ 040
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 02/03/2026“Americano” is an old term that in Latin America refers to all of the inhabitants of the hemisphere. This term continues to have cultural and historical valence in the region. We shouldn’t see it as the imposition on US citizens but rather an expression of a project of regional solidarity 2/ 050
Enrique Desmond Arias @desarias.bsky.social · 02/03/2026When Latin American’ push USian as a term for US citizens it isn’t about an unwanted demonym being imposed on those of us from the United States. It is, rather, about solidarity and belonging in the hemisphere 1/ 040
