Sexier in the city? Urban male great bowerbirds decorate bowers with human-made objects, creating brighter and more varied displays than rural males. Males strongly prefer human-made objects over natural ones, possibly boosting their appeal to females! shorturl.at/lcNY2 @royalsocietypublishing.org
The ground is covered in leaf litter. On the ground are two parallel walls made of sticks that form a corridor. At each entrance there are objects scattered around including grey plastic, green pieces of glass, grey stones, white snail shells and red items.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

“A newly discovered form of deception is more convoluted yet: The larvae of blister beetles emit a mix of volatile scents that resemble a flower, attracting bees. The beetles then latch onto the bee, hitch a ride to its nest, and eat the eggs.” #scicomm www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

Pigment concentrations only partially predict avian eggshell colour mimicry in a polymorphic host–brood parasite system | Biology Letters
The precise mimicry of host eggshell colours and patterns by some obligate avian brood parasites provides a powerful study system for understanding co-evolutionary arms races. However, most attention has focused on host behaviour in response to mimicry, ...
