all the more an argument for an opt-in approach, no? The people who wanna make hacks for mixtape can submit them. And everyone else doesnt get pissed off. Sounds like a win-win for me

It matters to a lot of the people that make the hacks that the mario players play. I dont know if aggrevating those creators is a smart idea. Personally, in this matter I wouldnt bite the hand that feeds me. But that's all I have to say on it. I hope my criticisms will be heard and acknowledged.

Basically: an opt-in system would make the list of hacks available smaller, yes. But it would also mean that any hack featured in Mixtape is done so with the consent of the creator and that someone has made the conscious decision that the hack is fit for the structure of a Mixtape.

A bunch of hacks introduce their own changes to the systems and ideally they teach you the quirks (what certain blocks look like, if certain fixes are applied etc). If you just skip straight into the final level of a hack you will never have been taught these things and it will confuse the player.

and it might irreversibly change how people engage with romhacks in this much more reductive and dismissive way. Morals aside, if the hacks available in Mixtape were properly curated itd alleviate the whole experience a lot as well.

However, Mixtape automating that process is what really irks me. It makes that behavior much more accessible and presents it like a normal way to play through a hack/level. If that tool becomes prevalent enough for most streamers to play exclusively through it, it will rub off on audiences-

In concept, Mixtape isn't any different from me opening a rom in Lunar Magic and just placing Mario on the level I want to play. But in doing that I am fully aware that I am breaking the game. And it is impossible to stop people from wanting to do this. But it's a conscious decision on their part.

I genuinely think 99.9% of the backlash about mixtape would go away if it had an opt-in system instead. I think the idea itself is cool. It's just not being handled in a way I agree with atm

This whole situation is a matter of respect toward the creators that make the content you wouldnt have a career without. No amount of "giving credit" will be enough to warrant tearing someones work apart to more efficiently wring it out for your own financial profit.

But if it was an opt-in system the tool wouldnt be able to function right away. Youd need people to actually sign up for the whole process. And the database would just be so uselessly tiny if it worked that way. And that doesnt make for good content.

every possible positive argument falls flat when your tool, that needs third party data, relies on an opt-out system. If you can opt hiro out "as well with everyone" it sure sounds like itd be a lot less work to develop an opt-in system instead no?
