Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Oh, they are talking about quad tracking the line to Rosenburg to deal with the increased traffic from the base tunnel. Even still, most of that won’t be passenger traffic, and so most of it won’t be going to Munich Central station. 120
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Yeah I know Austria is annoyed with Germany for not prioritising the connection from Munich to Austria. But how many trains would this be, realistically speaking? More than one per hour? Austria has been doing a lot of rail upgrades in this area, apart from the base tunnel. 110
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 26/06/2026It didn’t escape my attention that they’re building their second sbahn tunnel right now. Going to be a pretty nice network once they’re done with it. 130
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 26/06/2026What about Munich? Or is it sufficiently at “the edge” of Germany not to matter so much? 130
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 30/04/2026I hope they don’t pick another dud. Ontario politics hasn’t tended to attract the best and brightest. 210
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 11/04/2026GCN has been making videos like this for a while and I love it. 040
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 02/03/2026Same with cycling directions in NL. Doesn’t work. 010
Reposted by Derek Kraan3underscores.bsky.social @3underscores.bsky.social · 22/02/2026This is like the tenth research group using a totally new dataset to reach this same conclusion: building new market-rate housing helps low-income tenants. "These findings demonstrate that housing supply expansions benefit lower-income households through moving chains" 310636

Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 14/02/2026Personally I loved it. But I have always been in a story for whatever it had to share with me. 120
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 14/02/2026Most of the criticism I read was due to Joel being killed off at the beginning and then being forced to play as a character you hated, for half the game. But perhaps that was just a shield for hating it because lesbians. Hard to say. I loved the game either way and planning another play through. 570
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 05/02/2026It’s one of the things that is really core to the human experience in my opinion and I legitimately have a hard time understanding or relating to people who don’t or can’t cook and only ever reheat their food at a maximum. 000
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 03/02/2026I always thought my mother didn’t think much of videogames, turns out she was watching me play Ocarina of Time all the time when I was younger and liked watching me play. I guess I never noticed or didn’t remember. 030
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 02/02/2026Bingo. Solving emissions doesn’t solve traffic or urban planning. Environmentalist vs Urbanist. (You can be both, but I guess many aren’t) 010
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 29/01/2026And to be honest, I like the Caisse model. It’s working out much better than whatever they are trying in Toronto right now. Wait 2 years and see who is happier with their new “light rail”, Toronto or Montreal. Spoiler: it’s gonna be Montreal, hands down. 010
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 29/01/2026The REM runs on standard gauge, nothing wrong with it. 120
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 28/01/2026I wish people would do this more often. Now I’m just left to doubt whether it is or is not LLM generated. 120

Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Usually the rails are welded in the hottest time of year, so in the summer they are not under much tension. In the coldest months, they experience the greatest tension, but it should all be within spec. 110
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 21/01/2026I’m also on fastmail. But there are cheaper options and I’ll probably switch to one after my prepaid subscription runs out. 210

Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 17/01/2026Or bus lanes, or car lanes (I live in Utrecht and it snowed a lot last week) Actually they do plow some priority routes, but it’s basically just stay at home and enjoy the snow. 000
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 17/01/2026What is even the theory behind this? If you can’t run a gigantic plow doing the whole road at once, it’s a “nightmare”? 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026This was such a great “talk” to see in person. Highly recommend. 010
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026The worst example of this in my opinion is Nieuwegein. There is a "sneltram" that goes to Nieuwegein. But it's not actually fast, and it takes too long (30m to Utrecht Centraal). Completely unusable and Nieuwegein has high levels of car ownership. 000
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026This is the problem with Dutch transit. It's geared towards accessibility, layered on top of an inefficient built form. If Leusden was built with more density, and Amersfoort had something better than busses, you could compete with the car. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026The bus seems okay, but it takes 20 minutes to get to stn Amersfoort from the middle of Leusden. It's just not competitive with the car. In 20m you're already in Utrecht. In a real city with rapid transit, 3km would be a 6 minute trip. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Yes, it was closed 100 years ago and on the edge of the town. My impression of Leusden is that it's a low density car suburb. I'm sure people do bike the 3-5km into Amersfoort, but I think a lot of people never leave their cars. This is all they've built for us for almost 80 years. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026I'm actually kind of surprised nobody is covering it, because it's a fantastic project, one of its kind in the Netherlands, and I believe it's going to be the start of a massive levelling up of the country's transit infrastructure at the end of the day. We have so many underutilized corridors here. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Especially since we want to do this on the cheap. Well, what can be cheaper than upgrading an existing right of way from 2 to 4 tracks and running more trains on it. It's a big experiment, the City Sprinter between Dordrecht and Leiden, and it will be a blueprint for the future if (when) it succeeds 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Anyways, we are in a housing crisis now, and I think the only way out is to build more density with TOD. I think there is an interesting effect where the highway system is finally becoming saturated, and new development almost impossible. So we are being thrown back on rail to solve our problems. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026You either have density or you don't have density. If you legislate for low density, you are never going to have good transit services. We are lucky to have high density for a car-oriented suburb (compared to eg Mississauga) and they planned ahead with a BRT. So Leidsche Rijn is bearable. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Almere, Lelystad, Zoetermeer, these are all cities that were built since the 70s. They all have rail to the city center. But they are mostly built for the car, and modal shares reflect this. Leusden - is an example of a postwar suburb that got nothing. Total car dependency. 200
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026I live in a huge new development (Leidsche Rijn), which they built 3 new train stations for. Problem is, outside of rush hour, they only get half hourly service. So we take the bus, or bike, and many people just drive. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026I think the comparison with NL is not super apt then. In NL the problem is not that they haven't built rail to connect new suburban developments, the problem is more that these developments are limited in density by mandatory parking norms, which means there is no base for decent service. 100
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 11/01/2026Overall I don’t know if I can say that I have been to many transit stations in NL that have not served an actual center (or as close as they could get in the 1930s or whatever). I do fully agree with the transit-less sprawl of the past 60 years. Inflection point hopefully incoming though. 110
Derek Kraan @derekkraan.bsky.social · 11/01/2026Gotcha. Duivendrecht just happens to be at the intersection of 2 train lines and a metro, which probably explains its odd placement. The Uithoorn extension appears to run on a reactivated disused line. So in a sense that’s an infrastructure decision from a century ago. Not sure where #3 is. 210
