for context: i believe that none of it (or very little of it) is done in the service of advancing theory and understanding underlying mechanism. this, to me, is the only reason to use models in the cognitive and psychological sciences, but perhaps i missed the memo!

🚨 New publication at Nature Reviews Psychology! (natrevpsychol.nature.com) rdcu.be/d2jxg7tYHWNa A recently published paper in the same journal argued that infants use two separate domain-specific systems -- naive psychology and naive physics -- to reason about objects and others' minds.

Colleagues: what are your institutions doing to support international students given the threat to F-1 Duration of Status (D/S) and new CPT restrictions? I’m especially concerned about impacts on PhD timelines and optional summer internships. Would value hearing how others are responding.

there's just something magical about creating a title page that makes a manuscript feel real and come alive (then i remember that the paper itself probably already exists somewhere in the Library of Babel)

I share this story — which I heard during undergrad — because today I had to ask one of my students *only* to send me a paper draft when they thought they couldn't make it any better. My time is rather limited these days, & I'd rather not squander it reading drafts containing easily fixable issues.

This is the ninth draft. I know it's the best I can do." Kissinger looked at him and said, calmly: In that case, now I'll read it. He hadn't read a single version before.

This is an oldie but goodie: Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, asked his aide to work on a report. He sent it back eight times with the same question. "Is this the best you can do?" On the ninth, the aide finally snapped - "Henry, I've beaten my brains out.

Here's a fun question: If you had to estimate how many manuscript pages you've written to this point in your career -- be it for a journal article or chapter and published or published -- how many pages would that be?

turns out that making an extremely detailed outline helps with motivation (especially when writing something as open-ended as a chapter)

Anyone else like this? To get myself in the mood to write something, I like to read similar things. For example, I'm currently working on a chapter, and I'm struggling to find the motivation to write it. One thing that helps me find it is to read chapters written by my favorite scientists.
