RE: fantastic.earth/@arun/1173554419835… the #gnome community would really benefit from dialling down absolutely every other conversation topic for a year and focusing on this. just this. take a second to remember what the hell you’re even doing. and why.

i started an off-grid cabin coop with some friends back in 2010. the application process was on paper, and mailed in. it prevented low-effort entries completely. i look forward to open source projects taking this approach. “your first patch can be printed out and mailed to this p.o. box for review”

WhatsApp conversation screenshot from a Mac:

s> "This post has three jobs." how much ai was used to write this post?

b> 99% AI on the prose, I gave the structure and the rough outline, and ask it to fill it based on a discussion thread. Title was mine as well. Thanks for the reaction though, if the first comment is that if it's AI generated, well that means the thing I wanted to convey didn't go across.

s> yeah, sorry. if i detect an ai generated piece of text, i don't read it.

watching someone in a supervisory/pm role drop 100s of small-ish bugfix commits into a repo he’s never committed to as long as i’ve followed the project. maintainer is nowhere to be seen. the pm is technical. i actually have no predictions for how this ultimately plays out. but… huh.

Stay and fight.
Nine months ago, I had to field quite a few angry comments from folks who told me they intended to drop their GNOME Foundation memberships in the wake of confusing and opaque board behaviour. I say to you now what I told each of them back in September: Stay and fight. The GNOME Foundation saw a much needed — and long overdue — changing of the guard back in August of 2025. In the past 12 months, the Foundation has finally made the improvements it should have been making over the past […]
