NEW | NHC now increased chance of development of the low-pressure east of Florida over the next 48 hours to 40%. Generally, the storm remains disorganized. It's forecast to move over Florida today bringing rain. It will not develop while over land. The system will move back over the NE Gulf tomorrow

Happy Saturday! We'll see a mix of clouds and sun today as a weak cold front moves through the Peninsula. Temps will rise into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

And so it begins... the 70s are back! If you live on the coast, water temps in the 50s will keep you temps a few degrees cooler over the next few days. By Wednesday, a few 80s begin to show up inland!

Good morning! Bundle up before heading out this morning. Wind chills are down in the 30s for most. Skies are clear so at least we'll see a lot of sun today but highs this afternoon will only reach the upper 50s.

Thanks for all the messages wondering where I've been. I've been down for the count for nearly a week. Flu/Covid/Noro...1 or all. Who knows. I think it's all going around. Thanks to our great team for picking up the slack.

Beach day is done! That really escalated quickly! Low clouds and sea fog rolling in along the coast. This will become widespread everywhere by later this evening. Be careful traveling across the region 10pm to 10am Tue while dense fog advisories are up.

"Cold Weather Advisory" replaces "Wind Chill Advisory" this year. No matter how you say it, it's cold.

Radar Update: Rain (and storms) continue to move through the area. Temps will fall through the afternoon as cold air follows the front. Most spots will see downpours for anywhere from a few minutes to up to an hour. #floridaweather

Chances of severe weather are VERY LOW, but technically, they're not zero. SPC has some of the area in a "marginal" risk on Wednesday morning.

It's a cold start this morning with 30s down into Hillsborough County and even down toward Hardee, DeSoto and Highlands Counties. Tomorrow morning will be even colder. Are you ready? What temp is your heat set on?

4c. What IS important to remember is there is a direct relationship between how warm the water is, and how strong a hurricane is. So in years when water temps are higher, we would expect more powerful storms. Not necessarily more storms forming, but ones that do will likely be stronger.
100
Dennis Phillips @dennisphillips.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
4b. However, how many storms develop, and more importantly WHERE they develop is a result of dozens of factors that change every year. And those changes will continue year to year. So yes, some years will be active, others won't be.
100
Dennis Phillips @dennisphillips.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
4a. There has been a lot of questions as to why storms were so strong this season. There are also questions is this the new "norm". That's a discussion that certainly can't be solved in this short a space.

3. We've always known Southern Caribbean development is our biggest threat. Look at all the storms down there. Gulf storms were also plentiful. And of course, Milton crossed over from the Pacific and redeveloped into a Cat 5 hurricane at one point.

Dennis Phillips @dennisphillips.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
2. Even the area in the Caribbean that often spawn storms that threaten the islands stayed relatively quiet. (I guess it's ok to use the Q word now)

1. Look how few storms formed in the "traditional formation area" off Africa. Saharan dust had a lot to do with that.
