It could also be really cool if it turns out Maul is on Malachor to in some way save Devon, but upon seeing Ezra has a "oh wait this one is even better" moment. Leaving Devon as a dark side user that outlives Maul, continuing his legacy in a way.

My theory is that Maul being on Malachor was not because he lost Crimson Dawn, but because he lost Devon and losing Crimson Dawn was a bi-product of that. I also think that Devon won't die but instead turn back to the light.
