I can see the seed was always there waiting to germinate. I remember memorizing the full names of all my grandparents when I was a kid. When the time came, I had my starting point information. 2/2

Considering I had no active interest in doing genealogy until (at the same time) I had a child of my own and my husband was given his great uncle's research back to the mayflower, I get that offspring have little interest. Until they do. 1/2

We’re hosting a May Day training on what “No Work, No School, No Shopping” means, and how you can tap into the day of economic disruption however is right for you. We’ll also dig into the strategy behind economic noncooperation and why we’re taking action now.

No Work, No School, No Shopping: May Day Training Call · Indivisible

This May Day, we’re calling for a day of No Work, No School, No Shopping. We're flexing our economic power as workers, students, and everyday people to send a clear message to Trump: we will not do...

I guess that's the measure of life these days. We made it through another day. Just got to be sure to observe what is good and beautiful in each day. Thanks for the reminder.

It seems that owning free and clear is good way to motivate the market losses and protect against loosing one's home. I can dollar cost average what I would have paid into the mortgage over the next 5 years to build that account back up.

Denise Cross @denisecross.bsky.social · 11/03/2025

What about paying off the mortgage? If my retirement account is going to crash, I feel like taking about half out and paying off the mortgage will be the best use of my funds.

This worked for the last few decades, but this time feels different. The usual recovery may not happen. The structure of the economy may be fundamentally alteted. And those of us close to retirement won't have time to recover.

"Tariffs cause inflation and recession." That is the message. Short and simple, repeated everywhere. We have to get out ahead of the Republican noise machine that is trying to blame the coming economic downturn on Biden.

Denise Cross @denisecross.bsky.social · 05/03/2025

We are probably heading for a recession. And the stock market is likely going down. What are good strategies to preserve retirement accounts? I don't think we'll have Social Security at the levels(if at all) to depend on. I won't have a decade to recover like I did last time.

I will still buy necessary food and pay bills, but discretionary spending is off the table. I decided to begin 1/1. Day five and I didn't renew my Duolingo subscription, passed on a book I wanted, and didn't succumb to excellent sales on clothing I like.

In honor of discovering my Bavarian ancestors (back to 1600!) I have been making German foods. I made gingerbread for Christmas, since I come from a long line of master gingerbread bakers (17th to 19th centuries from father to son). Tonight I tried making gluten free spätzel. It worked perfectly.

Working on #genealogy is a constant for me. I just finished a big project, even hired a researcher in Germany to find some information in the local city archives, and have the last batch of church records back to the early 1600s to get translated. So now I return to my Smiths in Granville New York.
