An image from Dendrochronicle’s Historic Woodland Study at Caerlaverock Castle Wood for HES in 2019. My colleagues @hamishdarrah.bsky.social and Peter Quelch examining one of many ancient coppiced oaks planted centuries ago into medieval enclosure banks around the two castles. #ThickTrunkTuesday
Two men examining a large oak tree with two large stems, one still growing and one recently broken off in a storm. No dendrochronology was undertaken but approximate ring counts suggest the oaks were last coppiced in the early 19th century, long after the castle ceased to be occupied.
