There it is again, the "L" word in the NYT. Troy Jackson is a LOGGER, Paul Bunyan was a LUMBERJACK

TFW when your kid restarts an alt-weekly...in PRINT: anchoragepress.com. Huge mazel tov to Nat Herz and Veri di Suvero for bringing back a beloved Alaska paper -- I only wish I could get in my trusty VW and deliver copies for you to subscribers' homes

Today’s reminder, from a NYTimes headline, that the world has definitely changed since I watched Geraldine Ferraro stand in front of the crowd at the Moscone Center during the 1984 Democratic convention and drive them wild by simply saying “My name is Geraldine Ferraro.”

It's at least the 2nd time a NYTimes writer has called Troy Jackson a "lumberjack" www.nytimes.com/2026/07/27/u.... Today it was Jess Bidgood. Paul Bunyan was a lumberjack. Troy Jackson is a logger, not a mythic character out of folktales and children's books - national media, please take note!

In his NYT op-ed, @mattyglesias.bsky.social calls Maine's Troy Jackson a "lumberjack." Come on, Maine's not a children's book and Jackson isn't a figure out of a Monty Python ditty (youtu.be/B6mzobwTYyo?...), he's a LOGGER

The NY Times, in its endless drive to tell me how to run my life in all of its aspects, has now told me how to make HOT DOGS. No, NYTimes. No. I do not need directions for making hot dogs.

I'm sure it feels that way, NYTimes White House reporter, but it's actually 6.5 months, a bit more than "a handful," until the midterms. But this confirms my theory that right now, almost every assertion in a national political story ends with "....and its effect on the midterms"

Fun to read Judge Leon's opinion and note all the exclamation points (husband is cranky editor who says we all only get one exclamation point per year to use, and I married him anyway!) -- but the biggest pleasure of the day was this correction from Alternet's story:

Intellectual city: My brother Joel has been covering anti-government/anti-fascism protests in Torino, and when I saw this photo of his, I thought: I don't think I've ever seen a protest against the repression of CRITICAL THINKING thebattleground.eu/photo/

Borrowing from Wendell Berry, it's good to encounter the peace of wild things in the garden when the world feels like it's gone mad

Oh, those late-summer dispatches from out-of-state journos vacationing in Maine -- always good to check how the name of a place is spelled, as in SPRUCE HEAD, not SPRUCEHEAD, before publishing a story about it in the NYT

With the French version of our story theconversation.com/this-isnt-ho... & after living in Maine for decades, I can't unsee the image of Trump meeting not with a Russian leader but with a Quebecois dish - food Calvin Trillin would have called "stuff-stuff-with-heavy" - of curds, fries & gravy

I'll get back to politics news in my next post, but could not resist posting this video from my trip to Denali, where we witnessed a very itchy grizzly scratching his back in a snow pocket

After blasting a text to family members about the unusual earthquake we felt along the Massachusetts coast, son-who-lives-in-the-earthquake-zone-known-as-the-State-of-Alaska sent this condescending dispatch -- our petite quake would be just a regular Tuesday out there
