Ronald Erwin McNair was an American NASA astronaut and physicist died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in which he was serving as one of three mission specialists in a crew of seven. He was the second African-American in space.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was the only all-Black, all-female unit and part of the Women's Army Corps deployed overseas during World War II. The women were tasked with clearing a massive, years-long backlog of undelivered mail for over 7 million U.S. service members in Europe.

On December 26, 1944, Harriet Ida Pickens and Frances Elizabeth Wills became the first African American female officers in the United States Navy. They were commissioned as Ensigns after graduating from the Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Hunter College in the Bronx, New York.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, trained at Alabama's Tuskegee University during WWII. Their excellence, including protecting Allied bombers with very few losses, directly helped prompt the desegregation of the U.S. military in 1948.
