I know they're not based on a purchase price. I own a few properties and some acreage, and pay quite a bit of property tax each year (until November, hopefully). I know what I'm paying for.

Homes are taxed on property size and a bedroom count, among other amenities, but in no way are tax assessments considered as the home's value on the market

Tax assessments have nothing to do with retail value. Just go to any property appraisers website and start looking at market value versus tax assessments. They NEVER line up, not even close. I feel like I'm talking to a room of lifelong renters. Smh

No, city appraisals and market value do not jibe. If you get a private appraisal, like you would before putting your home on the market you'd get a retail appaisal. Aren't called what?

City assessments have nothing to do with sale prices. I own a home with a tax assessment of $132,000 but homes in the neighborhood are selling for $375,000. This is typical.

Bo, city property appraisers set value using a formula that typically includes the assessments of home around the one. Property taxes are based on those figures. Property taxes are assessed and collected locally.
