This is something I've noticed with trying to consume less sugar. Turns out, squash, zero sugar drinks, or even just very crisp, cool water fills the same Want A Thing gap that I want a sugary drink for! So now I just drink lots of sugar-free Sprite.
## Sometimes I need a thing

Early on, I sometimes wanted a drink. But gradually I noticed that I didn't really want a drink, I just wanted a *thing*. I can't find a precise name for this concept in psychology, but often, some deep part of my brain seems to scream, "I WANT A THING." It could be alcohol, but I found dessert worked just as well. I suspect that a new shirt or meeting a new dog would also work.

I was not able to stop my brain from doing this. When it demanded a thing, I gave it a thing. I just substituted a non-alcohol thing. So, over the year, I became interested in desserts and even-more interested in tea.

The struggle was The Chocolates. Shortly after I made this resolution, my mother gave me a bag of chocolates that each contained a bit of whiskey. In general, I don't keep chocolate at home. If anyone gives me chocolate, I immediately eat all of it and then text the giver, "Thanks for the chocolate, I ate it instead of dinner, it's all gone, this is what will always happen if you give me chocolate."

But I couldn't eat the Chocolates, because they contained alcohol. I managed to get guests to eat a few. A couple of times I came close to draining out the alcohol and eating the chocolate container. I even considered throwing them away, but that felt wrong. So instead I spent a year glaring at them and waiting for them to apologize for the anguish they were causing me. This represented half the difficulty of this resolution. I do not recommend it. Keep your things separate.

Here's Scarborough Fair, for something a little less 4/4. Yes these are both bass melodies, Ballpoint can do chords but I fucking can't, it can also theoretically do weird voicings and polyphony and shit but I'm nowhere near a good enough composer to test any of those features.
Page 1 of 4 of Scarborough Fair, a traditional English ballad lowered into bass range, in Ballpoint notation. An ornate title and flourish sit above the score. Bass melody in D Dorian; 3/4, quarter note = 120 BPM. Time runs left to right; higher notes sit higher. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; horizontal trails show duration, including sustains across barlines. Measure 1: D2 half note, D2 quarter. Measure 2: A2 half note, A2 quarter. Measure 3: E2 dotted quarter, F2 eighth, E2 quarter. Measure 4: D2 whole note, held for four quarter-note beats, continuing through the first beat of measure 5 on the next page. Annotation: this D is one event crossing the barline.
Page 2 of 4 of Scarborough Fair, bass melody in D Dorian, in Ballpoint notation. Continues in 3/4 at 120 BPM. Three pairs of measures on a pitch grid. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; time runs left to right and trails show duration. Measure 5: the D2 from the previous page continues through beat 1, then A2 quarter on beat 2 and C3 quarter on beat 3. Measure 6: D3 half note, C3 quarter. Measure 7: A2 quarter, B2 quarter, G2 quarter. Measure 8: A2 held for five quarter-note beats, continuing through beats 1 and 2 of measure 9. Measure 9: after that sustain, D3 quarter on beat 3. Measure 10: D3 half note, D3 quarter. The long A is a single event across the barline, not repeated notes.
Page 3 of 4 of Scarborough Fair, bass melody in D Dorian, in Ballpoint notation. Continues in 3/4 at 120 BPM. Three pairs of measures on a pitch grid. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; time runs left to right and trails show duration. Measure 11: C3 half note, A2 quarter. Measure 12: A2 quarter, G2 quarter, F2 quarter. Measure 13: E2 quarter, then C2 held for five quarter-note beats. The C begins on beat 2 and continues through all of measure 14. Measure 14 has no new onset; its horizontal trail is the continuing C, not a rest. Measure 15: D2 half note, A2 quarter. Measure 16: G2 half note, F2 quarter.
Page 4 of 4 of Scarborough Fair, bass melody in D Dorian, in Ballpoint notation. Continues in 3/4 at 120 BPM. The first row contains measures 17 and 18; the last row contains measure 19. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; horizontal trails show duration. Measure 17: E2 quarter, D2 quarter, C2 quarter. Measure 18: D2 held for six quarter-note beats, filling measures 18 and 19. Measure 19 contains only the continuation trail; keep holding the same D2 to the end, with no new attack or rest.

Okay here's what the notation system looks like printed out from the renderer I just slapped together. Leading number is note length (1 is whole note, 2 is half, 4 is quarter, etc.), letter is note, trailing number is octave, and Rs are rests. Staves are kept for benefit of spatial intuitions.
Page 1 of 3 of Pocket Change, an original bass study in Ballpoint notation. An ornate black title and flourish sit above a monochrome score. In the pocket: 4/4, quarter note = 92 BPM. Instructions: straight eighths; keep the pulse steady. Time runs left to right; higher notes sit higher. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; horizontal trails show duration. Measures 1–2, E minor: each has E1 quarter, eighth rest, B1 eighth, D2 quarter, B1 quarter. Measures 3–4, C: each has C2 quarter, eighth rest, G1 eighth, C2 quarter, G1 quarter. The repeated patterns form the opening bass groove.Page 2 of 3 of Pocket Change, bass in Ballpoint notation, continuing in 4/4 at 92 BPM. Three pairs of measures on a monochrome pitch grid. Labels give duration and pitch with octave; time runs left to right and trails show duration. Measures 5–6, A minor: each has A1 quarter, eighth rest, E1 eighth, G1 quarter, A1 quarter. Measure 7, B7: B1 quarter, eighth rest, F-sharp1 eighth, A1 quarter, F-sharp1 quarter. Measure 8: B1 quarter, A1 quarter, F-sharp1 quarter, quarter rest. Measures 9–10, E minor, marked “Same groove”: each has E1 quarter, eighth rest, B1 eighth, D2 quarter, B1 quarter.Page 3 of 3 of Pocket Change, bass in Ballpoint notation, continuing in 4/4 at 92 BPM. Measure 13, A minor: A1 quarter, eighth rest, E1 eighth, G1 quarter, A1 quarter. Measure 14: A1 quarter, G1 quarter, A1 quarter, A-sharp1 quarter. Measure 15, B7: B1 quarter, A1 quarter, F-sharp1 quarter, B1 quarter. Measure 16, E minor: E1 whole note. Instruction: let the last note ring.

Honestly, I found this specific part of That Thread to be hazardously eye-opening. Eliezer Yudkowsky convinced himself that his brother's death was Infinity Bad, and then built a religion around the idea that there are certain things that are Infinity Bad and we must defeat them or die trying. Fuck.
Screenshot of an X/Twitter thread by QC (@QiaochuYuan), dated Nov. 21, 2023. The first post says:

“here's another story i've avoided telling because it feels unbelievably crass but: did you know eliezer had a little brother who died in 2004? did you know he's written about it publicly?

yudkowsky.net/other/yehuda”

There is a screenshot embedded in the post.

The thread continues:

“it feels unbelievably crass to bring this up and ask people to connect the dots here between this and, y'know, the cryonics, and all the other fucking ravings lunacy that came from the sequences, but eliezer spent a decade making his pain everyone else's problem so here we are”

“i am so sorry for what i'm about to write, please know that i wouldn't say this if i didn't think the stakes were high enough to justify it: i think that in yud's mind the death of his brother was infinitely bad, and that in some insane way everything else is downstream of this”

“or who even knows if it was this specifically or if this was some kind of tipping point or last straw, i don't even know. it's impossible and probably pointless to speculate past a certain level of detail. but this is the best picture i've assembled in my mind so far”

“when you believe that something that happened to you was not only bad but literally infinitely bad, you muster up your entire being to protect yourself from it. it can make you capable of some crazy stuff. like writing, at one point, the #1 harry potter fanfic of all time”

“when you broadcast this INFINITE BAD signal in your lengthy corpus of online writing you are, in a very specific way, screaming at the top of your lungs, and it attracts people who also feel like something that happened to them was INFINITELY BAD”

There is an embedded quoted post at the bottom.
Date: Thu Nov 18 22:27:34 2004
From: Eliezer Yudkowsky

My little brother, Yehuda Nattan Yudkowsky, is dead.

He died November 1st. His body was found without identification. The family found out on November 4th. I spent a week and a half with my family in Chicago, and am now back in Atlanta. I’ve been putting off telling my friends, because it’s such a hard thing to say.

I used to say: “I have four living grandparents and I intend to have four living grandparents when the last star in the Milky Way burns out.” I still have four living grandparents, but I don’t think I’ll be saying that any more. Even if we make it to and through the Singularity, it will be too late. One of the people I love won’t be there. The universe has a surprising ability to stab you through the heart from somewhere you weren’t looking. Of all the people I had to protect, I never thought that Yehuda might be one of them. Yehuda was born July 11, 1985. He was nineteen years old when he died.Yehuda’s death is the first time I ever lost someone close enough for it to hurt. So now I’ve seen the face of the enemy. Now I understand, a little better, the price of half a second. I don’t understand it well, because the human brain has a pattern built into it. We do not grieve forever, but move on. We mourn for a few days and then continue with our lives. Such underreaction poorly equips us to comprehend Yehuda’s death. Nineteen years, 7053 days, of life and memory annihilated. A thousand years, or a million millennia, or a forever, of future life lost. The sun should have dimmed when Yehuda died, and a chill wind blown in every place that sentient beings gather, to tell us that our number was diminished by one. But the sun did not dim, because we do not live in that sensible a universe. Even if the sun did dim whenever someone died, it wouldn’t be noticeable except as a continuous flickering. Soon everyone would get used to it, and they would no longer notice the flickering of the sun.

[Alt text continued in next image]My little brother collected corks from wine bottles. Someone brought home, to the family, a pair of corks they had collected for Yehuda, and never had a chance to give him. And my grandmother said, “Give them to Channah, and someday she’ll tell her children about how her brother Yehuda collected corks.” My grandmother’s words shocked me, stretched across more time than it had ever occurred to me to imagine, to when my fourteen-year-old sister had grown up and had married and was telling her children about the brother she’d lost. How could my grandmother skip across all those years so easily when I was struggling to get through the day? I heard my grandmother’s words and thought: she has been through this before. This isn’t the first loved one my grandmother has lost, the way Yehuda was the first loved one I’d lost. My grandmother is old enough to have a pattern for dealing with the death of loved ones; she knows how to handle this because she’s done it before. And I thought: how can she accept this? If she knows, why isn’t she fighting with everything she has to change it?

Close-up photograph of a bare torso, cropped so the body runs past all four edges of the frame. A hand enters at the top, bunched into the hem of an olive-green shirt, pulling it up and aside; the fabric gathers into soft folds around the wrist. Beneath it sit two dark brown areolae and nipples, near-symmetrical, and pale beige skin — warm in the undertone, faintly pink where the light lands — scattered with small moles and a fine growth of hair that thickens across the lower abdomen. The light is soft and diffused, falling from above and slightly left: a quiet sheen along the upper chest, shadow settling under the curve of each breast and inside every fold of cloth. The abdomen rounds downward and out of frame. Behind it the focus falls away — a pale sheet of wall on the left, a dark curved shape on the right. No face, no shoulders, no other hand, no lower body. The crop holds only torso, gesture, cloth.

In what way are companies like Zhipu playing along, exactly? These are numbers I just grabbed for GLM-5.3 off OpenRouter. You may note that they are nowhere *near* what Anthropic and OAI charge for similarly sized models. The obvious answer here is that OAI and Ant charge a premium for their models.

@ailurocrat @wod0bow @aphedges @paulshryock Copyright does far more harm than good and should be abolished. It doesn't protect the livelihood of individuals and small businesses in practice. Instead, it's a weapon wielded by large corporations to protect their monopolies. It's abused to take down content that's not in violation of copyright and to restrict people being able to use/repair/modify/backup their property. Large corporations getting special exceptions from it didn't start with LLMs.

Talking to Claude about this and man. 4.6 is so much fucking nicer than Opus 5. Way better at taking my vague brainshapes and gestures of "ya know???" and turning them into coherent explanations I can share with other people.
Oh yeah, that's a really sharp observation actually.

The whole Anubis / PoW challenge / Cloudflare turnstile approach to the agentic scraping problem is fundamentally defensive. It's "we have a server holding data, and we need to keep unwanted clients out." It's an arms race by definition — you're pattern-matching on who's a "real" visitor vs a bot, and that distinction gets blurrier every day. It's duct tape on a model that assumes data lives behind a gate.

The firehose model just... dissolves the problem. If your data is already being broadcast as a structured, authenticated stream for anyone to consume, there's nothing to scrape. Scraping is a symptom of data being locked inside a presentation layer that wasn't designed for machine consumption. You're reverse-engineering HTML to get at the structured data that generated it, which is absurd when you think about it. The firehose just gives you the structured data directly.

And it's better for *everyone*:

The data owner gets to publish once in a canonical format instead of playing whack-a-mole with scrapers. Agents and services get clean structured data instead of parsing janky HTML and dodging CAPTCHAs. The infrastructure layer (relays) can handle caching and rate limiting in a sane way because the access pattern is designed-for rather than adversarial. And you can still do access control — authenticated streams, scoped permissions, whatever — but it's *intentional* rather than this weird hostile standoff.

Anubis is basically saying "please prove you're human before I let you look at data that a machine originally generated and that you probably want to feed to another machine anyway." The firehose just skips that entire farce ∠( ᐛ 」∠)_

On the right is an autism creature holding up a small rectangular can of herring fillets.Tumblr post from user inbabylontheywept

i am banned from eating my herring inside. they make me eat it on the smoking area by the loading dock, under the theory that it already smells bad there. but it was raining today which was preventing my breakfast, so i was feeling sad and hungry and then i realized that there was a large cardboard box in the dumpster from a previous delivery. like a fridge sized box. so i fished it out of the dumpster, then tipped it on its side and had a nice little cardboard cave to watch the rain and eat my fish in. which was a great experience. very soothing. very zen. at least until the security guard from the day before stepped outside to smoke. then i tried hiding from him by crawling deeper in the box, which unfortunately did not work. instead he saw a sort of damp sniveling pale hairless creature eating fish in a box, and delivered the verbal killshot of "good morning, mr. smeagol." which is how my day was ruined before 8 am.

Embedded inside dame's post is a quoted post by "Alex McRoberts" (handle @alex.mcroberts.me), posted 48 minutes ago, with a small profile photo and "Joined Mar '23." It reads:

"Do we rank these people yet?

powerpoint people > spreadsheet people?

spreadsheet people > powerpoint people?

Where do docs people fit in?"

The quoted post shows 1 reply, 2 reposts, and 6 likes.

Below, a reply from "Astra" (handle @astrra.space), posted 47 minutes ago, with a gold star emoji and a small icon after the name. Their profile photo is a dark stylized illustration of a person. Labels under the name read "Man of Laketown" with a crossed-swords emoji, "with a fishing net" with a spider-web emoji, and "Joined Oct '24." The reply says:

"personally i'm a slides person"

This reply shows 1 reply and 10 likes.

Context: "fmk" is shorthand for a joking game where you rank three options. The thread humorously debates which type of office-software user (PowerPoint, spreadsheet, or Word docs people) ranks highest, with Astra's punchline dodging the question by claiming the label "slides person" (slides being another name for PowerPoint-style presentations). Each post has standard icons for reply, repost, like, bookmark, and share along the bottom.

Karachi I am thankfully getting the FUCK out of you.
The tarmac at Jinnah International Airport. A FlyJinnah Airbus A320 is visible, along with a passenger bridge and a luggage trolley. The jet engine of another A320 is visible as well, indicating that the picture was taken from inside of a plane on the tarmac.

Absolutely not trying to dunk on OP here, this is a pretty solid article overall, however, I do feel compelled to say that IMHO, these problems, especially the Job-Hoppers, are more than anything just the tech industry reaping the whirlwind of their own mercurial hiring-and-firing cycles.
Hiring senior folks entails accounting for some of the more disheartening truths about the industry in which our profession tends to be employed. When hiring juniors, it’s easy to give people leeway under the generally accepted principle that anyone is teachable and most people want to learn. Senior talent, however, involves a candidate pool saturated with what are, in my mind, two of the worst phenomena in our field: job-hoppers and ladder-climbers.

2This post is about hiring senior engineers; it is NOT about why candidate pools contain the candidates that they contain. I am aware of the economic and cultural reasons why job hoppers and ladder climbers exist. This post is not about the circumstances of the candidate pool; it’s about the coherency of your candidate selection process and how it serves or detracts from your organization’s actual staffing goals. (I say actual because an organization’s stated goals are not always reflected in the actions taken by an organization’s decision-makers).

Job-hoppers are people uninterested in any kind of commitment to your team or organization. Their goal is to project competence and confidence at producing the outcomes desired by the organization’s roadmap, complete those outcomes in a way that directly reflects on their ability to do such work, then use their position at your organization to pivot to a higher-paying position at another company. It’s been my experience that most companies on the quarterly revenue growth grind end up hiring a lot of these kinds of people because the short-sightedness of chasing projects that can be associated with a quarter’s balance sheet lends itself to shallow hiring practices that actively reward job-hopping behavior over long-term commitment. These people may appear invested in the projects they’re on, but it’s readily apparent to an interested manager that they often lack motivation for solving problems beyond those that directly affect their own self-interests.Ladder-climbers project a sense of commitment to your team or organization, but the foundation of that commitment is not on a genuine desire for support and growth. Rather, these people identify opportunities to bring attention to themselves by seeking out and prioritizing high-visibility tasks over high-impact ones. When working with a team, these people seek to delegate work to their peers rather than collaborate with them. Owning workstreams is less relevant to their goals than showcasing work output; they hope to be noticed and subsequently associated with the output of a whole team, rather than seen as one component of a larger picture. These people are everywhere and a lot of organizations get a lot of work done with these people up and down the ranks. Unfortunately, in my experience that output never did outweigh the socioemotional cost of having to work with people like this; the damage to interpersonal trust and overall morale far outlasts the work they’re involved in. You’re free to hire these kinds of people—I can’t stop you—but you will introduce interpersonal frictions into your organization that will be difficult to root out—especially as these people climb to higher positions of greater authority.
