It’s a pattern that’s already happening with digital movies/tv, and it’s sad to see it spreading to gaming as well All I can say in the meantime is that I will be making a conscious effort to stock up on as much physical media as I can before it’s too late Rant over

All this is to say: We live in a capitalist, classist hellscape which seeks to milk us of every bit of money and agency we have in pursuit of PROFIT and POWER I know, there’s always been certain price barriers in gaming. But they’ve never been this high for so little in return.

6.) ALTERNATIVES ARE EXPENSIVE I’m seeing some people just telling others to “get a PC” based on this news. Mind you…WE ARE IN AN AWFUL ECONOMIC CLIMATE WITH THE RISE OF AI AND DATA CENTERS MAKING EVERYTHING WORSE SO BUILDING/BUYING A PC LITERALLY COST A CRAP TON RIGHT NOW

If they wanna charge you $80 for a digital license of a first party game that came out 2 years ago, THEY CAN. And they DEFINITELY will

5.) THEY FULLY CONTROL THE PRICES Coming from a Nintendo fan, GOOD LUCK waiting for a good sale on first party games. If the PlayStation Store, Sony’s OWN SITE becomes the only place you can purchase PlayStation games, there is no CHOICE. You are at the mercy of whatever price they set

Some libraries have games that people can rent out without having to pay an insane price to play them. This can only exist BECAUSE of physical games. But NO, these companies think anyone who even TOUCHES their game should have to pay the full $70+ for the experience

And what happens when you’ve played a game and you want to sell it? Or if you just wanted to give it away or donate it? I knew someone whose kid had a switch but only had 1 game. I had a few games I didn’t play anymore, so I gave them to him. He was ECSTATIC. We won’t be able to do that anymore

4.) GAME SHARING/SELLING BECOMES INCONVENIENT OR IMPOSSIBLE It used to be SO easy to share games. Just lend the disc to your friend. Now, you either WON’T BE ABLE TO SHARE GAMES AT ALL or you have to do some stupid ass digital game share mechanic that’s just annoying

Sure, there’s stores/small businesses that carry retro games but: • There’s a limited supply of old games, so they’ll eventually run out of inventory • Demand for old physical games will be higher, prices will inevitably rise with it • These stores may not be near you if you live in a small town

3.) WHAT HAPPENS TO GAME STORES? Speaking of GameStop, game stores LIVE off physical media. I saw GameFly had to address the changes on their account too. There’s genuinely no point of going to a physical store to buy a damn code, so they’re eventually going to become obsolete

2.) NO MORE PRE-OWNED GAMES As a kid, I went to GameStop ALOT to pick out games. The vast majority of those happened to be pre-owned games. Without a disc to return, there won’t BE pre-owned games for these newer titles.

1.) WE WON’T OWN ANYTHING We’re getting to a point where nothing we buy is ACTUALLY ours. Every game becomes a license to play that they can randomly strip away from us AT ANY TIME. Sony just deleted 500+ movies people PAID TO OWN. Who says they won’t do the same to your games?

This announcement has been bothering me ALL DAY and I really need to vent about it (rant 🧵) I’m not a PlayStation player at all (I almost exclusively play Nintendo consoles), but this has implications WAYYYY beyond Sony and PlayStation that is going to impact ANYONE who games
