Drawing from the rich tradition of Japanese folklore and martial lore, this graphic ink illustration channels the timeless archetype of the rōnin (masterless samurai) or musha shugyō (wandering martial pilgrim) traversing wild, haunted landscapes.

Silhouetted against a colossal, luminous moon that cuts through turbulent storm clouds, a solitary warrior stands atop a dark crest of wind-swept trees. Long, untamed hair streams into the night air alongside the fluttering hem of a robe, while the unmistakable angle of a sheathed katana projects diagonally from the hip. Rendered in stark, high-contrast monochrome, the composition pits deep black ink against bright white light, capturing the dramatic veil of clouds partially obscuring the lunar disc above. The serrated line of the forest canopy along the bottom edge grounds the figure, evoking the cold whistle of a high-altitude night wind and the charged, quiet tension preceding an encounter with the unknown.
In Japanese oral and literary traditions—from medieval mukai-banashi (ghost tales) to Edo-period kaidan—the full moon (meigetsu) serves as a powerful omen, a moment when the veil between the physical realm and the world of yōkai (supernatural spirits) grows thin. Stylistically indebted to the dramatic chiaroscuro of 19th-century ukiyo-e masters like Tsukioka Yoshitoshi—celebrated for his legendary series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon—this contemporary graphic piece demonstrates the enduring monozukuri (artisanal mastery) of modern Japanese ink illustration, using sweeping brushwork and tonal contrast to distill mythic drama into a single, haunting frame.

Maiko Kokaji, 1939, Japan

Standing in calm, poised repose beside the rough, deeply textured bark of a tree trunk, the young apprentice geisha Maiko Kokaji gazes toward the viewer with a composed, gentle expression. Her kimono is tailored from dark silk densely patterned with a field of small white floral blossoms that drape down her long sleeves and skirts. At her waist, a structured obi with geometric foldings is secured above her white embroidered inner collar (han-eri). Her traditional coiffure is adorned with a prominent white rose on one side and shimmering metal fluttering hairpin ornaments (bira-bira kanzashi) on the other, catching soft ambient light. Rendered in monochrome silver tones, the photograph creates a tactile contrast between the porcelain smoothness of her powdered face, the soft silk of her ensemble, and the raw, weathered bark of the tree beside her.
Captured in 1939—a pivotal moment during the early Shōwa era on the eve of global conflict—this photograph documents Maiko Kokaji within the traditional entertainment districts (hanamachi) of pre-war Japan. During the late 1930s, the centuries-old world of geiko and maiko stood at a historic crossroads between traditional arts (geidō) and the emerging modernities of interwar urban culture. Portrait photography of maiko was widely studio-crafted and circulated through postcards and cultural archives, preserving the visual elegance of young apprentices whose training required years of dedication to classical music, dance, and etiquette. The meticulous creation of her garment, hand-styled hair, and hand-crafted hair accessories reflects the living tradition of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery), showcasing how specialized craftsmen preserved heritage techniques within a rapidly changing society.

Roy Lichtenstein : Bauhaus Stairway Mural, 1989 Oil and Magna on canvas 26 ft 5.75 in × 17 ft 11.75 in Bob Adelman of the Gagosian: "Why mural painting?" Roy Lichtenstein: "For the pleasure of the dance." Further description & info in the alt text 👇

In the 1960s, Lichtenstein forged a new approach to painting by fusing popular culture and Western art history. His work is rooted in the seductive powers of advertising, and elevates the graphic imagery of popular print media and comic book illustrations to the realm of high art. Employing a handmade process, he mimicked the printing techniques of magazines and newspapers, making Benday dots and bright color synonymous with Pop art. Lichtenstein produced murals throughout his career, from Girl in a Window to Times Square Mural.

Measuring more than 26 ft tall and painted in oil and Magna on canvas, Bauhaus Stairway Mural pays homage to German abstract artist Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943) and his painting Bauhaustreppe (Bauhaus Stairway, 1932).

Lichtenstein’s mural was commissioned for the main atrium of the headquarters of the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in Beverly Hills, which the building’s architect, I.M. Pei, envisioned as a meeting place for writers, directors, actors, musicians, and agents.

The image of the banister expresses stability and direction in a chaotic period, while the geometric bodies of the students reflect Schlemmer’s belief in humanity as “an organic as well as mechanical creation.” The figures in the lower right-hand corner and upper left-hand corner of Lichtenstein’s mural appear to reference Schlemmer’s costume designs and volumetric renderings, as well as Schlemmer’s interest in mechanical movement.

Lichtenstein pays tribute to the German artist’s vision through a Pop aesthetic, using his own distinctive visual language to convey the Bauhaus’s innovative spirit. Finally, both Schlemmer’s painting and Lichtenstein’s mural, through their depiction of a bustling common space primed for dialogue, collaborative effort, and upward movement, speak to a Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, in which artists, designers, and artisans work together toward a single higher goal—an ethos that continuously guided the founders of CAA.
