Its the early Eocene and a hefty-clawed Thescelosaur emerges from its burrow in northernmost Canada to welcome the season-long day in its increasingly deciduous habitat. The thermal maximum may be behind them, but it has left its mark in the lack of filamentous pelage, replaced by armored scuts.

Some of you will be familiar with how challenging ceratopsians in spore can be, its honestly a miracle this worked as well as it did. Here's what's going on under the knurldowns.

As the sun sets, one of Mu's most bizarre predators begins to stir. Depicted here in as photo-real detail as I can muster is Cryptopneumon, a very derived volant leptictidan I made for the Populating Mu spectember challenge.
Cryptopneumon yawns off the sleep from its cozy forest bed.

Jerall Mountain Orsimer, 4E201. Orcs notably served the Mede Dynasty in the Great War as some of the greatest soldiers and blacksmiths Tamriel had to offer. While we see only city orcs and stronghold orcs in recent memory, some would go on to form vassal kingdoms under the empire.

Usually for this stage in the sculpting process I grab some nice alphas to scratch in the flow of the skin and clean it up later, this time around it was all Standard and Clay Buildup (with some pinch here and there) and I think it went swimmingly!

Every once in a blue moon I get the urge to revisit it as something more in depth as its own alien world, but I'd rather start from the ground up that way.

I was quite pleased with that iteration, and felt I left things on a high note as I had to shift gears for a little while after.
They once lived in a dark frozen world, but they thrived in it as easily as we a summer's day. Their clothing was layered and richly dyed, precious baubles braces and charms decorated their bodies in part ceremony and pride. They looked down on us, for they were made to be the perfect reflection of those who came before, or so they would say. Yet still, downtrodden and scarce were they, clinging onto their culture desperately in their conclaves wherever they could.Their technology was largely lost in the crisis that wrought them from their world, but many would be interested in recovering it as it was quite distinct from common industry. They had made artificial organism of living tissue and precision auricalcum machinery that could be controlled psychologically via neurological interfacing. Many would never find home again, and their long, slow lifespans could mean eternities of isolation as their focus on preserving tradition would put them at odds with whomever would take them in.

The design evolved quite a lot actually, and I would pick them up and drop them again for several years, especially during covid. I was never quite satisfied. More lore in alt text :P
I took a step back to try to work out just what their world would be like as I understood world shapes the people within it. I was obsessed with doing it from the ground up, to make a truly alien supernatural world of my own. What would a primordial realm built on the detritus of creation be like? Why are they so elusive today if they were so grand in their time? Why are they on our world and not their own? If they were so magnificent in eons past, what reduced them to this? When I picked the project back up, they were in a new setting, a different one from whence they came. They were truly aliens now, cthonic in theming but now bound to a planet shrouded in celestial anomalyAlways the type to want to start from the ground up, I began depicting their various subcultures, believing that it would open up more avenues for stories to be told. Even though they were in a more science fiction oriented setting now, I still wanted them to have an aura of fantasy. I'm stubborn like that. And ever stubborn, I wanted to preserve their primordial themes, giving them an ancient, near-precursor species timeline that presented them as the remnants of fallen glory, cast from their paradise as punishment for their hubris.

To mythical remnants of an archaic peoples oozing of hubris and living lives of ritual, ego, and debauchery. They've changed a lot visually as well to reflect that. I've put some lore in the alt text :)
2015, originally depicted as these legless serpent creatures of void and sharp edges. Design was heavily inspired - practically lifed from tbh - BeastOfOblivion's Lockjaws.2016 I introduced them to a setting where they functioned better interactively as more humanoid things. Thus began discovering what they would be as a reflection of humanity. My earlier iterations like this I wanted to emphasize the subtler differences in anatomy as I felt the best way to make a creative humanoid was to see what I could contort into that shape.2016 They lived in The Underworld, which was actually the interior edge of the stardust shell that contained their universe, a vast land was once home to great empires clans and city states and full of demigods and abyssal beings of primordial ooze.2016 I started developing the overall themes of their culture alongside many friends. I was beginning to get into HP Lovecraft thanks to Skyrim's Dragonborn Expansion and both of which would influence how I wanted to depict them as these 'other' beings.

Revisiting Securidon, one of my Atlantean Mesonychids. Left has more original proportions, right I've modified to emphasize the forelimbs. While Securidon and it's relatives are open grassland sprinters, it in particular likes to grapple and tackle it's prey, and needs strong arms to do so.
