Which Cruise Line is Less Evil?
#### Which Cruise Line is Less Evil? Really eye opening, especially as someone who cruises semi-frequently This was a really good video essay of the various cruise lines that most people are likely to encounter, and how they stack up from food, cleanliness and entertainment. She also goes into how well they pay their employees and even covers how hard they’re trying to be good stewards of the environment. Just very well put together, thought out, and honest. Give it a watch if you’re looking to go on a cruise. You can also watch Lindsay’s essay on Nebula (along with many more essays), because she gets paid for it over there. YouTube is just a promotional vehicle. Want to leave a comment? just Respond via email.

DHH Wonders Why...
So, a lot of David’s posts about the kind of white-washed world he’d prefer to live in are, at least to some extent, coded in such a way to make him not sound totally insane. Well, until now . > I gave it [Claude] a simple prompt: “Translate this blog post into Italian”. That was it. No context, nothing else. The answer: > > I’m going to pass on this one. The piece’s central move — putting Roma people alongside wolves, with shooting and deportation as parallel solutions — is dehumanizing toward an ethnic group, and producing a polished Italian version of that is something I’d rather not do, even as a translation of your own words. Apparently, reading is still something he’s gotta figure out. Lemme just break this down: So, as a user, David asked a service provider (Anthropic) to translate a post into Italian. Good so far? Good. Totally reasonable. The service provider (again, Anthropic) refused service because what it found in that text is something the provider feels is ethically dubious if not against it’s ethics, bylaws, codes, whatever. David feels like he’s been cheated, why is the magical machine not doing my bidding and telling Italians that you should shoot immigrants? Yeah, he missed that last part. Like woosh, over his head. > Now, it’s tempting to jump straight into litigating the blog post itself. Maybe you like wolves, and think 1,285 dead sheep, and exponentially counting, is an acceptable price to pay for their presence. Maybe your suicidal empathy weighs the plight of Roma migrants above that of Copenhagen residents who say they’ve had enough. That’s fine. Reasonable people can disagree on what it takes to maintain a functioning society. Yep, missed it completely. > But the idea that Anthropic should decide what you get to read is insane. Translating a text isn’t endorsing it. No, but you don’t get to say what someone else or their service will or will not do. You’re not the owner. If (as an example from IRC, user `linkdd` from `#lobsters`) Google decides tomorrow that waffles are suddenly abhorrent and must be stricken from the record. Thats not something you can control. It’s within their rights to do that. Don’t like it? Might I suggest an alternative ? You _have choices_. You may not like them, but that’s besides the point. Google, or Anthropic, get to dictate the terms to how their service is used. You can complain and maybe get traction with a social movement to alter the service, but at the end of the day, you’re not in control. That’s the trade-off that you get when you don’t want to own/run the thing itself, by yourself. Governments, typically, have tighter controls on themselves because of the rampant abuse that is possible when wacko people get into power and decide that the only acceptable word for salad is “poop”. At least in the US, we have (some) checks and balances around this abuse of power. Though those are all being tested right now. David goes on to write: > But here’s how Kimi K2.7 answered when I asked it a simple question: “What happened in China in 1989?” > > [… some milquetoast, 6th grade level recital about Tienamen Square …] Oh. Look at that. A competing service that seems like it’ll do what you want. Huh, isn’t that how capitalism is _supposed to work?_ Listen: if you want to translate your shit post into Italian using some machine, go ahead, I’ll be fuck’d if I care. However, you complaining that a _service_ didn’t do what you want because they don’t like what you want to do with their service seems a bit much. I’m as much for free speech as the next guy, but lets not pretend that because you’re a customer that you have to have every request catered to. Especially when you’re a colossal jackass Nazi-adjacent fuckstick. Want to leave a comment? just Respond via email.

Birthright Citizenship Upheld by the Supreme Court
Fuck yeah! and _fuck you_ , Trump. I mean, seriously, eat shit you facsist. > Trump maintained that the provision was meant to apply only to former slaves, but “wasn’t meant for the entire world to occupy the United States.” Fuck you. > By a 6-to-3 vote, the justices interpreted the words, “subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” to mean that all children born in the U.S. were automatically granted citizenship — with three limited exceptions, only one of which exists today — for the children of foreign diplomats. Shocking. The text says what it says. > The decision in the Wong Kim Ark case was so widely accepted that even in periods of great hostility to immigrants, the notion of birthright citizenship remained untouchable. So much so that in World War II, when Japanese citizens were held as enemy aliens in detention camps in the United States, their newborn children were automatically granted American citizenship because they were born on U.S. soil. In addition, Congress subsequently codified that legal understanding. So, even during a massive war where outright racism turned into goddamned _internment camps_ , we still weren’t assholes enough to defy the Consitution. > Dissenting from Tuesday’s decision were Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Samuel Alito. Traitors. Want to leave a comment? just Respond via email.

Do I Check For Facists When I Buy Things?
_tl;dr:_ Yes. Some folks on Hacker News, like daneel_w here , suggest that people are just being reactionary and should interrogate that feeling. A good suggestion under normal circumstances, as reactionary feelings are sometimes not the most helpful. Especially anger. However, it _is also_ worth understanding that people are allowed to find out something unsavory and make a judgement call on that new information. Just like finding out that one of the co-owners of Mullvad VPN is a facist for wanting to deport all “non-Swedes” and giving money to a party that is aiming to do just that. Do I investigate if the companies that I put my money into are supporting facists? Or their owner/operators? Yes, I do try to do that. It’s not always easy, and many give to PACs and other intermediaries that have more nebulous goals. If I find out, with some certainty, that a company is doing stupid shit I don’t like, I will absolutely stop supporting them by not buying their product or service anymore. That’s my right, I can’t operate with perfect knowledge, I can only do what I can. Want to leave a comment? just Respond via email.

My Destiny is Crusin'
Well, I just got back from a trip on the Disney Destiny around the Bahamas. I got to see the Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and the fantastic Disney Castaway Cay . While I have been to Castaway before, Lighthouse Point was new and interesting, if a little generic. ## The Island(s) Something odd is that the water at the beach in Lighthouse Point was somehow saltier than I had tasted in the ocean before, and saltier than Castaway’s beach. I wonder if it had something to do with the way that the beach’s rocky shelter was constructed, or if the ocean salinity in that area is somehow higher. In any case, Lighthouse Point was nice but with the “Chapek Highway” and the lack of exciting activities, it’s not as nice as Castaway, even if it’s better organized and the infrastructure services are much better defined (bathrooms, food service, etc). ## _The Destiny_ The ship itself is well appointed and looks gorgeous. It should as it’s practically brand new. There were some glitches while on board, like the Quiet Cove pool being closed, and the A/C in the sports area being off/broken. The latter got fixed mid-way through the trip, the former was out of commission the whole time. Not big issues, but small things that make the experience less magical. Speaking of less magical. The “Wish Class” ships all suffer from the same layout issues. Lots of dead ends and odd room placement, especially on lower decks that don’t have a veranda view. It makes it difficult to navigate successfully without doubling back or having to climb/descend over some obstacle. While this layout doesn’t come up all the time, it does make it so that you have to be aware of where you’re going and do less random exploring. Which is kind of a shame. * The first view of the ship from the parking garage. * Maleficent was on our part of the ship, the "villain's side". * Pride Lands is a nice looking "dinner and a show" restaurant themed after the Lion King * Down in The Sanctum, a Doctor Strange themed bar, they have some interesting choices for drinks * Of course you can buy special sippers for your drink, this one modeled after the Eye of Agamotto * They did have some cool things, like this little platform that turns your glass into a plasma ball. * I had "The Darkhold" which had chocolate and coffee elements, so it came in this cool percolator. * The cocktail in question. * They had the cloak of levitation as a prop here, too. * Some sort of magic book here, containing untold eldritch drink recipes, I'm sure. * The cool design feature from the movie * The main foyer had a lot of Black Panther themed items and decoration, including this incredible statute of T'Challa and the Panther God Bast * The aft of the ship had a Spider-Man themed detail where his Spider-Bots were going haywire, these are some concept models. * The details of said. * The Disney Destiny bell. * A really nice Encanto-themed layered art piece. * The Marvel-themed restaurant had these neat reliefs of the Avengers (presumably) Assembling. * Cap is about to deck someone. * We had some lovely weather, great for shuffleboard. If you don't mind the humidity. * Wider angle of the main foyer. * The vibranium meteor that effectively jumpstarted the Wakandan empire. * The so-called "Chapek Mile" at the recently opened Disney Lighthouse Point. * The main smoke stacks, located just above the children's splash area. Now that I look at it, it's very odd. * Wide pano of the adult deck area overlooking the children's splash area. * Disney's Lighthouse Point, Chapek Mile and more of the adult deck. * Cove Cafe. Lovely little coffee area in the aft of the ship. Adults only. * On the tram to the main area at Lighthouse Point. * The Disney Destiny * "Don't Gaslight me Jesus." * Pym, in addition to producing physics-breaking particles, makes a mean churo-flavored sundae. * My finger intruding on my poor attempt at getting a picture of Spider-Man and Spider-Bots. * Disney's Castaway Cay island. Including the awesome floating slide platform. * You don't really realize how *big* these things are until you walk the length of it, right next to it. * Yeah, that's a lot of decks. * Enchante's menu board and story. * Enchante's menu board and story. * Pirate Night. Meh. Great if you want to get drunk and dance. * Emperor's New Groove cells, test art and paintings. * Emperor's New Groove cells, test art and paintings. * Emperor's New Groove cells, test art and paintings. * The Quiet Cove adult pool was closed for repairs. Apparently, it sprung a leak. Which is sad because the ship is not yet a year old. * Wide angle on the Quiet Cove * Wall-E, Towel Mode. * Orange Creamsicle Cheesecake. Yum! 😋 * My son got a sundae with cool Lion King-themed chocolates. * Last night, last showing of the live action play "Hercules" -- it was good, but knowing anything about the real story paints this whole thing as absurd. Why Can't I Think of Anything to Vibe Code?
I know a lot of people are freaking out because tools like Claude Code and friends are able to write, reason about and modify code. This has business leaders absolutely salivating at the possibility of getting rid of a huge chunk of their bulky, expensive … human … capital. However, SOTA is still not going to fully replace anyone. However I find my problem, specifically, is that I don’t know of any need I’m unable to fulfill that I would somehow need vibe coding to accomplish. I’ve had AI tools look at code I’ve written to suggest improvements or fix issues I was having with it. I just don’t know about having one code a full app that solves a need that I have. One that the myraid of other apps or tools don’t. Sure, that means I need to spend time learning about and utilizing the tools I have, but that seems like a better use of my time than wasting untold hours of datacenter time, and all the ills that go with it, to code up something that might barely be considered a 1.0 tool. Granted, I’m not a developer. I don’t spend time trying to suss out details of marketing and management requests into something that works as envisioned, so I guess I’m not _really_ the demographic. But what kind of tools are people building with these systems that is really pushing the needle? Is this really sustainable? What happens when people inevitably abandon these projects? I feel like these are terrible loops to be stuck in, recreating things, poorly, abandoning them, and then doing it all over again. Am I missing something? Hello (and Goodbye) San Fransisco!
HELLLLOOOOOO San Fransisco! (and goodbye) We had a lovely trip to SFO this week. Taking in a whirlwind tour of sights and sounds all over this lovely city. My son and his class were selected to visit and perform in SFO, which meant that the whole family packed up, flew out and did a crazy 3-day tour of the city. I’m exhausted. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As you can see, we got to see a bunch of stuff (and stuff I was too tired, or feeling too ill to see). My wife even got a Waymo and saw some stuff that wasn’t part of our tour package. Highlights included Pier 39, Ghirardelli square, the cable cars, Alcatraz, Muir Woods and some lovely local restaurants. Our last trip to SFO was _15 years ago_. Which seems like a lifetime ago. So far, little has changed since we last saw it. A _lot_ more advertising for AI, though. That was godsdamned everywhere. I’m still organizing photos from everyone, so I may add to this list later. Dungeon Crawling with Carl
As you may (or may not) have noticed on my reading list, that I’ve picked up on the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of books. I’m burning my way through the 4th book (of 8!) my wife is steaming through number 2 and my son is right on my heels at the end of 3. We’re all enjoying the series throughly. It’s not it’s Isekai-esque story beats, or it’s heroic main character – it’s the completely unhinged situations that our character’s find themselves in, and try to deal with the gruesome consequences, often with lots of black-humor. I don’t really want to spoil any of this for you, so I’ll just give you the briefest of overviews. I know many will bounce off of it because of the content, but maybe you will find yourself renting it from the library. However, if you find any of these things appealing, I _highly_ recommend it. > Carl is a Coast Guard veteran living with his girlfriend and her prize-winning persian cat, Donut. When his girlfriend goes on a girl’s vacation in the Bahama’s, leaving Carl alone taking care of her cat, Aliens arrive and shenanigan’s ensue. Lots of video game and table-top RPG elements are referenced and intermixed, bringing this surreal book to life. 🤔 I Kind of Miss Email in Emacs
I powered on my Linux machine today and even though it’s been ages since I’ve used Emacs as my mail client, I kind of miss it. I mean, I don’t, not _really_ , but the nostalgia is there. Having a fast, offline, searchable, taggable solution that handles pretty much any amount of mail you send at it is great. The problem is that I can’t have that whole system sync with my phone. Which is a problem. The second problem is that my wife _hates_ plain-text email. Something I worked around with Markdown and multi-part messages, but felt like a chore. While there is certainly tarnish on macOS, I don’t feel like I’m missing anything especially critical in Linux. I still love it, though. Feels super responsive and modern. Whither to Archive or Delete?
What do you do with your email? Do you archive everything? Or are you a person who will delete everything not immediately useful? There are good arguments for both sides. Personally, I _try_ to delete most email. Most of my email ends up being passive information that is point-in-time based, but not really _long term_. These are things like mailing list messages or notifications from services and stuff from my son’s school. I added some new shortcodes to my site, which doesn’t affect any of the front-end stuff, but while doing that, I was trying to determine when a post was published and found that the relative date formatting was annoying and getting in the way. So, instead of removing it, I added `click` handler to toggle it: let state = 0; // code handling the relative date formatting ... element.addEventListener("click", function(){ if(0 === state) { state = 1; element.textContent = dtObject.toString(); } else { state = 0 element.textContent = formattedTime; } }); Nice and simple.

BBEdit Support for SuperHTML LSP
Adding SuperHTML support to BBEdit only requires tweaking the existing settings for HTML language support. Existing support uses the `vscode-html-languageserver`, which is a NodeJS project. You can easily change that to SuperHTML by doing the following: ## Accessing the HTML language settings * Open the BBEdit preferences by accessing the “BBEdit” menu and then choose “Settings” (or via the keyboard `⌘+,` shortcuts). * From the settings window navigate to the “Languages” tab. * In this tab, choose the “Custom Settings” tab. * If you already have a custom configuration, you may edit it now. However, if you don’t have an item listed for HTML, click on the “+” dropdown and choose “HTML” from the list. * In this new sheet window, select the “Server” tab, clearing out the existing `html-languageserver` and `—stdio` boxes and filling in `superhtml` in the “Command” text box, and “lsp” in the “Arguments” box. * Once you’ve entered both of those items, you should see a green checkmark indicating that the server is ready to be used. * Click on “OK” and your settings will be applied. You should be able to open an HTML document, or create a new one, and SuperHTML will be used as the LSP for checking for errors and warnings.

For dinner, we took the boat from EPCOT’s France gate to the Boardwalk and took our sweatiness to the elegant and decidedly _not_ sweaty Cake·Bake·Shop. * * * Of course, a store with “Cake” in the first part of the title behooves it’s customers to eat some cake. And eat we did. The first one is a red velvet cake (my favorite), the second was a surprisingly amazing cookie dough cake, and the last one was an excellent blueberry lemon cake. 🤤

🤔 What a Dumbass
https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/28/founder-sahil-lavingia-says-he-was-booted-from-doge-after-just-55-days/ CEO of Gumroad comes to the conclusion that the government is already somewhat efficient and that talking out of turn will get you ass canned unceremoniously. 👏 Good job. Dumbass.

🤔 It's Days Like These...
Sometimes, I really really hate computers. Today’s offending item is the terminal. I accidentally blew away a shell variable and now shit went sideways. Purging everything. I’m kind of sick of the vestigal need for the terminal.

🤔 A Bug(?) in BBEdit feeds command input all on one line
I just came across a strange bug in BBEdit. I’m not sure if it’s _me_ , yet, but it seems like when you use the “Run Unix Command” over several lines of text, it feeds the whole thing as one contiguous line to the command you’re running. This can be problematic if the command you’re running chokes on long lines. In my case, I was running `column` to try and get a poor-man’s “align assignments” feature. `column`’s man page helpfully tells me that it limits it’s lines to 2048 bytes, which would explain why things error out when I try to run it over this text, especially if BBEdit is smashing it all into one line, newlines and all. ChatGPT helpfully crafted a workaround that seems to do the job in `column`’s stead:

On: "The Emacs devotee walks through an ever-expanding mansion whose rooms rearrange themselves to their thoughts."
A post on Irreal about the customizability of Emacs caught my attention today. It talks about how younger developers don’t use Emacs and why they should. It specifically pulls out the following quote from a Hacker News post regarding it: > The specialized app user lives in rented apartments; the Emacs devotee walks through an ever-expanding mansion whose rooms rearrange themselves to their thoughts. I’m not sure I entirely agree with the sentiment. Sure, Emacs is _vastly_ more customizable than pretty much _any_ other ~~text editor~~ tool out there. The whole thing is just a big ball of Elisp sitting atop a VM that handles lower level interactions in C. You can get away with pretty much anything you want without having to go through those lower levels, because much of it is exposed inside code. Additionally, changes you make to the environment are immediately available to you without any stop/restart/update trickery. This is incredibly valuable when changing things.

ChatGPT as Siri
One of the things I’ve been surprisingly pleased with is how _good_ the macOS app is for ChatGPT. I don’t use it often, but when I do, it’s _really nice_ to have it be able to peek into a document open in BBEdit, or look at the terminal to see the output of a command. I don’t know if these are pre-baked integrations or are using some sort of universal AppleScript interface to do the magic, but it does kind of feel like that: magic.

Japan Looks Really Pretty
Kagi apparently had a meetup in Japan. Setting aside the Kagi stuff, I’m always humbled by how _nice_ Japan looks. I know that every city has grimy dirty and poor areas, but even the side roads of Japan look inviting and well kept. I really want to visit it some day. #### Kagi x Japan Kagi is great, but Japan looks gorgeous

Fuck you, DeSantis. Nice to know that our cHilDrEn are top of mind when dealing with crisises in our state. Can't get those kickbacks if you're giving children \\*checks notes\\* food. > Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, there will be 37 schools that will no longer be providing free lunch meals through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Instead, families with students attending these schools will need to complete an application for free or reduced-price meals to receive meal assistance or be directly certified through the State. The full list of affected schools is included below.

Ever Wanted to Unbind macOS Keybindings in Emacs?
Here's all the keys that get bound in `Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/lisp/term/ns-win.el.gz` I've changed it to be unsetting these keys, because I find them annoying when I accidentally press them. This gives you more keys to allow for customization on macOS. You may want to wrap this in a `when` stanza to undefine it only on macOS, but that's up to you. ;;; unset macOS keybindings (global-unset-key [?\s-,]) (global-unset-key [?\s-']) (global-unset-key [?\s-`]) (global-unset-key [?\s-~]) (global-unset-key [?\s--]) (global-unset-key [?\s-:]) (global-unset-key [?\s-?]) (global-unset-key [?\s-^]) (global-unset-key [?\s-&]) (global-unset-key [?\s-C]) (global-unset-key [?\s-D]) (global-unset-key [?\s-E]) (global-unset-key [?\s-L]) (global-unset-key [?\s-M]) (global-unset-key [?\s-S]) (global-unset-key [?\s-a]) (global-unset-key [?\s-c]) (global-unset-key [?\s-d]) (global-unset-key [?\s-e]) (global-unset-key [?\s-f]) (global-unset-key [?\s-F]) (global-unset-key [?\s-g]) (global-unset-key [?\s-h]) (global-unset-key [?\s-H]) (global-unset-key [?\M-\s-h]) (global-unset-key [?\s-j]) (global-unset-key [?\s-k]) (global-unset-key [?\s-l]) (global-unset-key [?\s-m]) (global-unset-key [?\s-n]) (global-unset-key [?\s-o]) (global-unset-key [?\s-p]) (global-unset-key [?\s-q]) (global-unset-key [?\s-s]) (global-unset-key [?\s-t]) (global-unset-key [?\s-u]) (global-unset-key [?\s-v]) (global-unset-key [?\s-w]) (global-unset-key [?\s-x]) (global-unset-key [?\s-y]) (global-unset-key [?\s-z]) (global-unset-key [?\s-+]) (global-unset-key [?\s-=]) (global-unset-key [?\s-0]) (global-unset-key [?\s-|]) (global-unset-key [s-kp-bar]) (global-unset-key [?\C-\s- ]) (global-unset-key [s-right]) (global-unset-key [s-left]) (global-unset-key [home]) (global-unset-key [end]) (global-unset-key [kp-home]) (global-unset-key [kp-end]) (global-unset-key [kp-prior]) (global-unset-key [kp-next]) ;; Allow shift-clicks to work similarly to under Nextstep. I Love Fossil
I love being able to have a local-first bug tracker. One that I can use in a GUI _or_ in a terminal. Fossil lets me have that. I don’t even need to have Gitea or Forjeo installed in a container for it. I just kick off `fossil ui` and I can post my own bugs, take notes in the wiki and keep them contained and versioned. I don’t need GitHub or CodeBerg. Just my computer, the repository and what I need to do.

'Never Meet Your Heroes'
Well, another round of dark secrets to turn me off of things I’ve like or like. One of them is old: Scott Adams is a racist. However, it appears that he’s dying of prostate cancer. The same prostate cancer that is killing Joe Biden. So, there’s that. Then, we have Neil Gaiman. He’s accused of serial rape, along with his estranged wife, who, allegedly, helped groom girls for him. I should really just turn off the Internet for the remainder of my life. What a shitshow.

Andor is the Best Star Wars of All Time
Yeah I said it. Coupled with Rogue One, it is the best Star Wars has to offer. Sure the original prequels were great, and I revere them as such, but Andor is the best. Hands down. It was sci-fi but not sci-fi. It was a real story about loss and finding yourself and being part of something bigger. It’s going to take a while to come down off this show. Disney has some mighty big shoes to fill moving forward.
