Finished The Count of Monte Cristo yesterday. A fun, breezy 1,250-page read that satisfies in a way that feel-good films do, with a lean towards intellectual and historical depth, but a more plot-driven thriller than I expected.... defiantsloth.com/2026/10/10/finishe…

This candy store in Jordan, MN (allegedly the largest in the state, no way I’d argue against it), was a roadside spectacle. What’s in the dome? You could never guess.

Our outings to the MN State Fair were more subdued this year, but still great food at the classic spots (Baba and Midway Men’s Club forever), and this piece in the Fine Arts building really stuck with me.
A colorful abstract painting features several cups and a tall striped container set against geometric shapes and bold areas of blue, orange, green, and black.

Incredible growth story for a once-beleaguered toy maker: Lego has seen a 10× increase in revenues over the past 20 years, amid growing changes in its core customers’ attentions (obviously: screens). While I don’t get the new Lego floral arrangements, it’s good to see physical toys still sell well.
Lego's revenue has steadily increased from 2004 to a projected peak of around 12 billion dollars by 2025. (Screenshot copied from linked-to Economist article.)

Ah, a nice morning run around the lake, with a beach stop through the woods before wrapping up. I like to do this pitstop on occasion, as the wooded area offers a welcome sound bath before grinding back into the work day in front of a screen.
A serene lake scene features a sandy shore in the foreground, calm water reflecting the surrounding trees, and a partly cloudy blue sky above.

Still thinking about this… watched Resurrection a few months ago, and have been meaning to re-watch Holy Motors. As these churn over in my memory, they feel like cinematic siblings. Also, that last act of Resurrection is in my permanent memory. So beautiful.
Two promotional posters featuring the text Holy Motors and Resurrection are overlapping each other, featuring images of a limousine, various characters, and a silhouette of a person against a multi-colored background.

Neon lighting. We all love it. WSJ with a nice dive into maintaining the format, and reformulating an historically terminated (due to cost effectiveness) color of neon, cyan green. Nice cinematic call-outs to Casablanca and Eyes Wide Shut, too. [Photo mine, unrelated; gift link URL]

I fully support local coffee shops deploying canned brews, giving us a choice against (usually) poorly executed, mass-produced offerings at most grocers. SK Coffee released theirs earlier in the summer, and it’s an excellent first offering; alas, just wish it was more widely available at retail.

Thinking back a month and a half about my first attempted pizza in an outdoor oven. Kept it sliding on a mountain of semolina for the launch, it turned out well, and now I’m ripping a few of these every week for us. These pizzas can be elite, and with care, anyone can (probably) do them.

While I should have known, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a summer banger Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo is. I may only be a fourth of the way through this opus, but it’s one of the breeziest 19th century reads I’ve wrangled, and so far, a pitch perfect swashbuckling adventure.

Absolutely cinematic Wolves win last night. One of those games from which you bask in the afterglow. Closed out the series (down three starters to injury) and against seemingly all odds. Huge McDaniels, Gobert, and TJ game, you love to see it come together in the post-season.

Trying the new Acme Weather app by the original Dark Sky devs. A clean, succinct interface kindly echoes the old app. Community submissions is neat, but not prominently used yet. The innovations seem to be multiple forecasts averaging and this cheeky experimental notifications pane. I’m in.

Appreciating The Verge’s work lately, including keeping us informed on the best gas masks to buy in 2026 (naturally), and doing stellar work informing the latest in Minnesota. A tech site has every right to do this (particularly in the wake of technology being used against citizens of the USA).

In watching Criterion’s 2025 4K release of Eyes Wide Shut, my immediate thought was that the grain and contrast is spectacular. And evidently, this was a major part of the release: they went back to the actual original 35mm celluloid for scanning, and it has yielded a film-like master. Bravo.

While I haven’t read it since it was released (back in 2013?), Brian K. Vaughan’s The Private Eye was particularly prescient. We’ve been heading towards its worldview for years and… have arrived, I’d say — even if every private detail about our lives hasn’t leaked, anonymity is impossible.

In Monocle’s Briefing newsletter today, they highlighted the modernist/brutalist architecture of Japan’s Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium from 1964 and its risk of being torn down. At a glance, it shares a design philosophy with Death Stranding’s entrances for its Knot Cities. Love the overlap.
