Now of course, they can get into anything. But container breakout is demonstrably hard. So they need a security engineer. Which costs $75/hour. The more people that are using secure systems by default, the more difficult it becomes to budget spying on some group of maoists in Denver or wherever.

Security culture should become part of basic discipline on the left. Hamas is running laps around Israliens right now because they didn't succumb to nihilism wrt communications security. Its the idea of the all powerful united states that is truly damaging, not naivety about the possibility.

But I think the reason to be secure isn't personal. As hackers (in the og sense), we should seek to get as many of our comrades to adopt as many security strategies as possible. If 5 million leftists did so as a kind of subculture, theres already more secure users than there are US open researchers.

For sure, you shouldn't do illegal stuff or communicate secrets with computers. Unfortunately when shit goes down, we will. And being as clean as possible, using a full source bootstrap and separating concerns, ridding your environment of ambient authority, makes you expensive to hack.

I've spent a time decoding portions of libgen PDFs, and given the complexity of PDF spec its easy to mask syscalls as bytecode, and I've found some in the octal major libs like poppler do not do thorough checks (is it even possible?) and they are mountains of rot anyway bsky.app/profile/defe...
