It is also important to me to share this artist statement I submitted to the NEA, since they didn’t have a chance to add the statements to the fellows pages yet. I hope all of us are finding ways to survive our “now.” I hope what haunts us can one day humor us.

Honored to announce I’m a 2025 NEA Fellow! Out of 2000+ applications received, I’m overwhelmingly humbled that my work would be recognized in this way. It’s important to me that I aim for clarity in my work, and I’m grateful for this support to help me keep reaching folks.

13 | Orders of Service by @williekinard.com “A boy plucked a chirp from me like I was a grass blade./ My own name a field of chirping.”
It feels fitting to me that I finish this booke on a Sunday. Willie’s work remands me of the dexterity that is possible in language. The collection is described as a fugue & that is very evident throughout, with elements & motifs interwoven & returned to from beginning to end like
a chorus or, more aptly, a hymn. There is a musical quality that takes charge of much of willie’s work, & I think attunning yourself to the music is necessary to appreciate it.Orders of Service by Willie Lee Kinard IIISelf-Portrait as the Cricket
The way my legs sit, slightly curved around the knees, old women squint their eyes yet still ask me if I'm single,
The summer night bows to the flutter of my lashes & I know this is only about my walk.
I suppose they are for music-making, I tell them, leveraging only the floor for balance.
There is nothing to brag about, it is true:
I have drawn thunder out of a woman.
I have never broken a heart on purpose & not felt the shatter of it in my hips.
My hips often announce my presence before I do.
I have made my bed in a thicket of grass blades.
A boy plucked a chirp from me like I was a grass blade.
My own name is a field of chirping.
My own name is a church of fields.
I listen for it when I put a man on his back.
A man on his back is a call & response.
My own name is a choir of churches.
My own name is a chorus of strumming.
Some nights, the only refrain I care sung.

12 | Another Last Call, edited by Kaveh Akbar and Paige Lewis “Yes, there must be. My brother/ deserves a good reason.” - @brendanconstantine.bsky.social , “A Controlled Substance”
When I hear about the person Kaveh describes his Past self to be, I can almost never believe it. What I can believe, however, is the kind of care he and Paige Put into the curation of this anthology. What this has reminded is the miracle that is language that resides in all of us whether we are at our lowest or in the sphere of someone that needs it. Grateful for the words of the poets here, & for language that reaches back for us.Another Last Call: Poems on addiction and deliverance

A Controlled Substance
My brother is late again, somehow the glass of water by his plate, the fact that we filled it without him, makes him all the later. Dad tells us to start eating, says there's nothing worse than cold fish, but suddenly no one can find a rhythm, we fumble our napkins like we've never seen them before, like it's just occurred to us we're in the wrong house, aren't even a family but four people kicked off the same bus for being vulgar. So much is worse than cold fish, I think, the flowers on the table, the bubbles in my brother's glass, the size of our knives all terrible. "There must be traffic," my mother says and I understand it as a command. Yes, there must be. My brother deserves a good reason. Not the only reason, that he is deep in his bed, as if at the ocean floor where it is still the first night on earth and whatever moves there must grow its own light.
