i also occasionally experiment with other things that dont stick like different ways to color/shade mints eyes and glasses. the fact i mostly do uncolored doodles doesnt help there, but also i admittedly got attached to the "blank white eyes" look anyway

i ended up hacking together a little script (i promise i know how to program but generally i write code in a sort of "cheap pencil doodle because thats all it needs to be" sense) and the results are disheartening. (in a good way, for the sake of my wallet and sugar intake.)

there are some really good replies in this thread but im going to talk about me because thats what i know

when i first learned about alt text i was really into it and thought it was important. and i still think it is important, and in a perfect world i would be doing it every time in full

but ive run into multiple instances where the idea of having to do alt text has stopped me from posting something. the spontaneity i enjoyed from my previous experiences with social media gets bogged down with having to figure out the final hurdle in actually making the post. this isnt a job, its something i do for fun, and the more work that goes into putting a thing out there the less i feel like its worth doing. alt text wore me down

when it comes to comics, in some respects it was helpful, like i could count on alt text covering my poor handwriting or explaining something i dont know if i drew well. and honestly not wanting to deal with alt text is part of what motivated dabbling in digital text and just outright improving my handwriting. both of which i think are good

i still try to think of the experience of someone reading just the alt text. i dont want to abandon it entirely even if its become less and less frequent, more and more sparse

it also doesnt help that theres no standard for any of this. i dont know if im "supposed" to be really detailed or if its ok to be vague. does it have to be "an anthropomorphic deer sits in a bright dull greenish background with a thought bubble, wearing a black bandana and an oversized sweater, it has fluffy hair and two pointy horns"? i dont really have a good sense of who is helped by being so detailed. but "a deer is thinking" misses so much of the context. i dunno. thinking about the phrase "a picture is a worth a thousand words" and setting aside the fact that my pictures arent really the kind of thing that phrase is meant to cover - and that i do a lot of comics which translate pretty well into just text - thinking of alt text as "and here is where those thousand words go" is exhausting and feels like it defeats the point of art. reduce your work to its constituent parts. a picture is just tags

also, honestly. the thing i am bothered the most about regarding alt text is that theres no way to just add it in post. i feel like this would be so much simpler if that were an option. like, im always open to the idea of someone messaging asking "hey can you explain __?" so i dont have a concern with taking the time to address something afterwards. i just dont like it as a barrier to entry. i have limited time and limited energy and trying to preempt an audience that, for me, as a tiny account doing silly stuff off in the corner, may not ever even see what i do - i just do not have that in me. and i guess "if youre fine with doing it afterwards, why not do it before?" is a fair retort, but like. if i know its for an actual person, not an imaginary one, and i know what they need, that is a motivating force. its not abstract anymore in that case.

but like, again, it has to be up front because thats how bsky works and i dont like that and maybe bsky just isnt a great place for how i want to art on social media but here we are
