Souji's original Digimon being Mermaimon was 100% meant to be a joke but also I did fall in love with the idea that he originally gave birth to a humanoid Digimon which he then discarded for increasingly more monstrous ones. You know, just for the obvious theme.

If Beatbreak was longer, Souji would've been a great candidate for a redemption arc NOT because I can't handle him rotting in prison, but because they could've made his Pichimon evolve into MarinAngemon the moment he feels his first positive emotion and that would have been SO FUNNY.
