One of the reasons I like our spaced-out primary season is that folks from other states can pitch in on different elections. I want to help Abdul El-Sayed and Angie Nixon (plus so many more) across the nation, but I'm swamped with Colorado elections now

As a former Colorado Supreme Court clerk, perhaps I have too much trust in our more liberal Justices, but I do think it would be good for us. Read this decision, it may make you feel better about our chances! law.justia.com/cases/colora...

(My full ballot guide w/ explainers drops soon!) And for the record, I am doing comms & strategy work for the No on 84 / Yes on 85 campaign (for Courageous Colorado Action, a cross-partisan group) but I accepted that after I was already a Yes on 85! fin of 🧵

My full ballot so nobody thinks I'm hiding anything: No on 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, 132, 133, 134, 135, 136, 137. Yes on NN, 85, 87, 7A. 85 is the one place I split from the left guides, and now you know why!

In June, people vote for what are literally names on a page, and whole campaigns exist to explain why one name is different from another. Same thing here. Give people a question they can read, and let us make the case. I'll take that fight every time.

Yes, 85 could make conservative measures easier to read too. But their measures are already easy to read and we fight them all the time. 81 and 132 are easier to read than 87 and they are bad for Colorado. Organizing voters and opposition is what stops their movement.

Think about what we want to run next. Rent stabilization in Denver. A statewide data center ban or limits. A Colorado version of the Montana Plan to get corporate money out of elections. All of them are easier to pass if the question is written for more people.

In general, I always support things that hand power to regular people and grassroots organizers. The initiative process is the one tool we have that doesn't run through the Capitol. And this is good for the local level where lefty ballot questions thrive.

imo, 85 is a jump ball and I think it bounces our way during rulemaking and the court challenges which will be Democrat controlled. 85 even opens a TABOR question where it could overturn or clarify the bad parts of TABOR that mandate certain scary language.

Read Amendment 87 on your ballot. 194 words, one sentence, all caps, opening with SHALL STATE TAXES BE INCREASED $2.7 BILLION, with the fact that most people get a tax cut buried in a table after it. That's OUR lefty measure! That's what the current rules do to it.

Blue states already do this. New York's Democrats passed the same 8th grade standard unanimously in 2023 and called it a voting rights victory. Zohran Mamdani voted for it! And the NY law is more stringent than this b/c they define 8th grade while we will have SOS rulemaking.

Deep Singh Badhesha @deepnotshallow.bsky.social · 9h
Colorado already has the hardest ballot questions in the country per Ballotpedia. Thirty years of that hasn't saved us from the right. TABOR passed under a dense question. Prop HH lost by 20 with one of the longest titles ever. Amendment T lost because nobody could read it.

Deep Singh Badhesha @deepnotshallow.bsky.social · 9h
The main objection from the left is that 85 removes tax info like the Prop GG table. A table of numbers is about as plain as it gets, and the funding sentence can be written so a normal person can read it. The Blue Book says those laws "could" face challenges. IMO they will stay
100
Deep Singh Badhesha @deepnotshallow.bsky.social · 9h
85 is two sentences. Ballot questions have to be in plain language at an 8th grade level, and no law can force wording into an initiative's title that conflicts with that. It repeals nothing. The tax info and the tax table can stay!

This isn't the first time I've split from my side when I thought the position was dogma instead of policy and it won't be the last. I backed ranked choice voting (P131), housing on a dead golf course (2O), and opposed the flavored tobacco ban (310) all against other progressives
110
Deep Singh Badhesha @deepnotshallow.bsky.social · 9h
Advance Colorado put 85 on the ballot, and a lot of progressives are a no because they don't trust Advance. I get it. I did weeks of research before I landed here, and I'm a yes on 85 for the policy, regardless of who brought it.

Understanding the question on your ballot is part of the right to vote. The people who can't get through a 200 word question are new citizens, second-language readers, and folks with a disability or two jobs. Immigrant groups asked me to take this on so I did.

My parents are immigrants from Punjab. I was the family translator before I could drive. Sit at a kitchen table with a 150 word all-caps question and a parent who trusts you to explain it. You can't. So they skip it or vote no on everything.

"Liberal commentator and consultant" damn, what happened to "liberal provocateur?" But yep... I'm a YES on Amendment 85, Plain Language Ballot Questions, as a lefty progressive even though Advance Colorado brought it...😬🧵

I'm devastated to hear about Justice Hart's passing today. She was a great friend, mentor, boss, and Justice. It was an honor to work as her law clerk. She tirelessly fought for working class people as a Justice and advocate. Sending lots of love and prayers to her family

I'm a firm believer in revolutionary optimism. I believe in my bones that our ideas are vastly popular w/ the masses & that a better world is possible. Money in politics is absolutely a problem, but we will still win. It's sad to see the level of hopelessness I see on the Left

I will never understand why extremely thin skinned people get into law or politics. The whole nature of our industry is disagreement and conflict. If you can't handle this stuff, go do something else. Bunch of whiny babies.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is in NYC for a conference and posts a pic with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying they're discussing "making housing, childcare, and transit more affordable." Mike's making his pivot left. Does it save him in April? Time will tell, but it just might.

Also there are a ton of metaphors that work perfectly for a bee and our movement. The many vs the one. When bees fight off bigger predators like wasps, they win through teamwork and sheer numbers. We could call HQs the HIVE. We could make nectar and honey jokes for days.

To actually weigh in on the DSA mascot debate. The bear is a stupid idea. DSA's symbol is already the rose. If we need an animal it should be a Bee as they are also the main pollinators of roses AND they are socialist animals.

Ed Sheeran now has no opening acts and no backing band… The fight for liberation and progress often feels lonely. But as more and more people speak up and put their livelihoods on the line, it gets less lonely every day. They have the money. We have the many.

To be clear, I have no love for Kirk or Candace Owens and their politics. But there's a lesson here. When you build a movement on exploitation and grift, you're not immune to it when you die. The machine moves on and monetizes you too. Only your few real friends will grieve.

Deep Singh Badhesha @deepnotshallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
In the year since Charlie Kirk's death, I've seen no real grief from the MAGA crowd. Just grifting and opportunism. The one exception? This genuinely grief-filled tribute from Candace Owens. Ironic that his only real friend was a Black woman.

Drake could recover his entire reputation in the community, and imo put Kendrick in the dirt, by playing "Iceman" at all his upcoming concerts & be real loud when he says "Free Palestine" (Kendrick, for being such a big bold truth-teller, has yet to utter those words btw)

What blows my mind is Kanye said some of the most insane, antisemitic stuff I've ever seen, including literally praising Hitler. He still gets welcomed into stadiums to perform. Meanwhile Macklemore gets canceled for saying "Free Palestine" Tells you what this is really about

NYT on Melat Kiros and Sam Forstag “I have no illusions that we’ll kumbaya our way through this,” Kiros said. “It’s going to be a fight. A really dirty fight, probably. We’re challenging power, and they will not go quietly.”

Could you imagine the wall-to-wall news coverage if Abdul El-Sayed or Zohran Mamdani said and did the stuff Colorado GOP nominee Victor Marx does? Yet almost nobody nationally knows the Colorado GOP nominated an actual con artist for Governor.

AOC winning the presidency and launching a New Deal 2.0 would be the most American thing ever, because it'd be the ultimate 4th quarter comeback. And what's more American than blowing the whole game, then storming all the way back to win it in the final seconds?
